Workaround

To workaround this issue, you will need to specify an absolute path (UNC or Local folder) in the SourcePath attribute of the configuration.xml file.  For example, your configuration.xml looks as follows:

For Enterprise Customers using Office 365 ProPlus, users will be migrated to the latest version in February of 2016. If you want your users to stay on Office 2013 and continue to receive 2013 security updates, you can delay their migration to Office 2016 ProPlus. Your users will continue to receive security updates for Office 2013 ProPlus until September of 2016 through the same update method you are currently using. However after that time, no additional security updates will be made for Office 2013 ProPlus, so we strongly recommend that you migrate to the latest version before September of 2016.

There are three ways we can delay the migration to Office 2016 ProPlus, The first is to use a GPO setting that blocks the update or you can push out a registry key manually that will do the same. Those options are outlined in our KB here:

Thirdly, we can use the Office Deployment Tool (ODT) and the configuration.xml file to prevent the migration as well.

Work Folders on Windows Server 2012 R2 supports only local storage, i.e. the sync share location must be a local path on the server.

As we talked to customers, many of them use a NAS device for individual user data storage (e.g. home folders, user redirected folders), and they wish Work Folders can sync those data to user devices.

I'd like to recruit a few customers who are willing to collaborate closely with us on this feature development. The new Office—takes the work out of working together

Collaboration is the way we get things done in the workplace, but the process itself can be complex and frustrating. It shouldn’t have to be. We set out to make working together easier and more impactful by building a suite of integrated apps and services that removes barriers and empowers teams to do and achieve more.

Office has always been the go-to tool for helping individuals do their best work—whether for professional documents, powerful analyses or school presentations. People often start and end their work in Office, but there is often a messy middle that involves a lot of discussion—in person, by phone or via various tools—as well as multiple (sometimes conflicting) inputs. Today we are delivering a set of experiences that is built for making teamwork seamless.

• We have had real-time co-authoring in all of our web apps since 2013. We are now taking it to the next level by building it directly into our native apps. With this release, we’re making co-authoring in Word real-time, which lets you see what others are writing immediately, as it happens. We’re committed to expanding real-time co-authoring to each of our native apps and you should expect to see more over time.
• Skype for Business is now available in the client apps, allowing you to IM, screen share, talk or video chat right in your docs. This same experience will be coming to Office Online later this fall. Skype for Business also has faster screen sharing and now adds the option to start a real-time co-authoring session from any conversation or meeting.
• Keep teams connected with Office 365 Groups, now available as part of Outlook 2016 and in a new Outlook Groups app on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Office 365 Groups allows individuals to easily create public or private teams. Each group includes a shared inbox, calendar, cloud storage for group files, and a shared OneNote notebook to keep the team productive.
• Office 365 Planner helps teams organize their work, with the ability to create new plans, organize and assign tasks, set due dates and update status. Planner’s visual dashboards and email notifications help keep everyone informed on the overall progress of their initiative. Planner will be available in preview, to Office 365 First Release customers, starting next quarter.
• Originally unveiled earlier this year, GigJam is today available in private preview and will become part of Office 365 in 2016. GigJam is an unprecedented new way for teams to accomplish tasks and transform business processes by breaking down the barriers between devices, apps and people.

• In the coming months, Cortana will get even smarter and more useful by gathering intelligence on Office 365 through Outlook 2016 support.
• With the Office Mobile apps and Continuum on Windows phones, your phone can act as a desktop, and you can project, create or edit your presentation or sales budget from your phone to a monitor while using the same phone to take notes with the OneNote app.

Office 2016 for Mac

In July, we released Office 2016 for Mac to our Office 365 customers. The new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote are a significant step forward and provide the best of both worlds for Mac users—a familiar Office experience paired with the best of the Mac platform. The level of engagement and excitement about this Office for Mac release has surpassed our expectations. As promised in July, today Office 2016 for Mac will also be available as a one-time purchase.

Ongoing Office 365 customer value

Whew—that was a lot! With this release, we’re also shifting the cadence of Office on Windows to feel much more like the cadence we have on the Office mobile and web apps, which release every month with new value. So, going forward, Office 365 customers will now enjoy new features and capabilities delivered continuously in the Office desktop applications as part of their subscription. It’s a new day for our desktop apps.

こんにちは。Windows プラットフォームサポートの林です。

本日は Hyper-V 環境における手動でのゲスト OS のクラッシュダンプ採取手順についてご説明致します。

手動でのゲスト OS のダンプ採取手順は本来は通常の物理環境と差異がなく、ダンプキー(右 Ctrl キー + Scroll Lock キー x 2回)をゲスト OS へ入力することでハング時などはクラッシュさせることができます。しかし、ダンプキーをゲスト OS へ送るには仮想環境の場合、仮想マシン接続でゲスト OS に接続し、仮想マシン接続に Window フォーカスが合っている状態でダンプキーをホスト OS から入力する必要があります。そしてこの場合、Window フォーカスが仮想マシン接続に合っているかどうか視覚的にわかりにくく、誤ってホスト OS にダンプキーが入ってしまうというリスクがありました。そこで今回はこのような方法ではなく、スクリプトや PowerShell のコマンドレットでダンプキーや NMI を安全にゲスト OS に送信してゲストをクラッシュさせる方法をご案内致します。

手動でゲスト OS をクラッシュさせる手順は Hyper-V ホストのバージョンに依存しており、ホスト OS が Windows Server 2012 R2 以降とそれ以前の OS で手順が異なります。

1. ホスト OS が Windows Server 2012 R2 以降の場合

• Windows Server 2012 R2 からは Debug-VM という PowerShell のコマンドレットにて NMI をソフトウェア的にゲスト OS へ送ることができるようになっております。そのため、ゲスト OS 内で NMI 受信時にクラッシュする設定を行い、ゲスト OS ハング時などには Debug-VM を使って手動でクラッシュさせメモリダンプを採取します。

2. ホスト OS が Windows Server 2008 / 2008 R2 / 2012 の場合

• Windows Server 2012 R2 以前の場合には Debug-VM コマンドがありませんので、VBScript 等にてダンプキー(右 Ctrl キー + Scroll Lock キー x 2回)をソフトウェア的にゲスト OS へ送ることで安全にゲスト OS をクラッシュさせることができます。

以下、上記それぞれの具体的なダンプ採取事前設定および手動でのクラッシュダンプ採取手順となります。

注意：下記作業は "ゲスト OS" 内で実施お願いいたします。

1. PageFile の大きさを 物理メモリ + 300 Mbyte の大きさに設定します。
   例えば、物理メモリ 8192 MB（ 8 GB）を搭載の場合は、初期サイズに 8492 MB 以上を設定します。

   a) [スタート] - [コンピュータ] を右クリックし [プロパティ(R)] をクリックします。
   b) [システムの詳細設定(A)] をクリックします。
   c) [詳細設定] タブの [パフォーマンス] にある [設定(S)] をクリックします。
   d) [詳細設定] タブの [仮想メモリ] の項目にある [変更(C)] ボタンをクリックします。
   e) この画面にて、[すべてのドライブのページング ファイルのサイズを自動的に管理する(A)]
      オプションを外します。
   f) システムボリューム (通常 C: ) をクリックします。
   g) [カスタムサイズ] にチェックを付け、[初期サイズ]、[最大サイズ] の両方に物理メモリ + 300 Mbyte
      以上の値を入力します。 (例えば 4096MB メモリの場合、4396MB)
   h) その後 [設定] ボタンをクリックし設定を反映させ [OK] ボタンをクリックします。
   i) "変更結果はコンピューターを再起動しなければ有効になりません。" というポップアップが
      表示されますので、[OK] ボタンをクリックします。
   j) "パフォーマンス オプション" のウィンドウも [OK] ボタンにて閉じます。

2. 完全メモリ ダンプ (Full Dump) および NMI 受信時にクラッシュするよう
   レジストリ設定します。

   a) 「Windows ロゴ キー + R」キーを入力し "ファイル名を指定して実行" のウィンドウを
      表示させます。
   b) "regedit" と入力し、[OK] ボタンをクリックします。

   c) レジストリ エディタが起動しますので下記のレジストリを設定してください。

      キー: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl
      値: CrashDumpEnabled
      タイプ: REG_DWORD
      設定値: 1

   d) ゲストが Windows Server 2008 R2/Windows 7 もしくはそれ以前の場合には
      同じく上記キーに NMICrashDump というレジストリを作成します。

      キー: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl
      値: NMICrashDump
      タイプ: REG_DWORD
      設定値: 1

   注意: ゲストが Windows 8/Windows Server 2012 以降の場合には上記 NMICrashDump
         を設定する必要はありません。

3. ゲスト OS を再起動し、上記設定変更を反映させます。

以上で完全メモリダンプの設定は終了になります。現象発生時に下記の
「完全メモリダンプ取得手順」にてダンプをご取得お願いいたします。

1. "ホスト OS" 上で管理者権限のある PowerShell プロンプトを起動し、以下のように
   dubug-vm コマンドで NMI をゲスト OS へ送信します。

   debug-vm -name [仮想マシン名] -InjectNonMaskableInterrupt -Confirm:$false -Force

2. ゲスト OS はクラッシュしますので、ゲストの再起動後にログオンし、
   以下のダンプファイルを採取します。

   C:\Windows\Memory.dmp

注意：下記作業は "ゲスト OS" 内で実施お願いいたします。

1. PageFile の大きさを 物理メモリ + 300 Mbyte 以上の大きさに設定します。
   例えば、物理メモリ 8192 MB（ 8 GB）を搭載の場合は、初期サイズに 8492 MB 以上を設定します。

   a) [スタート] - [コンピュータ] を右クリックし [プロパティ(R)] をクリックします。
   b) [システムの詳細設定(A)] をクリックします。
   c) [詳細設定] タブの [パフォーマンス] にある [設定(S)] をクリックします。
   d) [詳細設定] タブの [仮想メモリ] の項目にある [変更(C)] ボタンをクリックします。
   e) この画面にて、[すべてのドライブのページング ファイルのサイズを自動的に管理する(A)]
      オプションを外します。
   f) システムボリューム (通常 C: ) をクリックします。
   g) [カスタムサイズ] にチェックを付け、[初期サイズ]、[最大サイズ] の両方に物理メモリ + 1 Mbyte
      以上の値を入力します。 (例えば 4096MB メモリの場合、4396MB)
   h) その後 [設定] ボタンをクリックし設定を反映させ [OK] ボタンをクリックします。
   i) "変更結果はコンピューターを再起動しなければ有効になりません。" というポップアップが
      表示されますので、[OK] ボタンをクリックします。
   j) "パフォーマンス オプション" のウィンドウも [OK] ボタンにて閉じます。

2. 完全メモリ ダンプ (Full Dump) を設定します。

   a) 「Windows ロゴ キー + R」キーを入力し "ファイル名を指定して実行" のウィンドウを
      表示させます。
   b) "regedit" と入力し、[OK] ボタンをクリックします。
   c) レジストリ エディタが起動しますので下記のレジストリを設定してください。

      キー: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl
      値: CrashDumpEnabled
      タイプ: REG_DWORD
      設定値: 1

3. キーボードから STOP エラーを発生させるように設定します。
   上記同様にレジストリ エディタで下記のレジストリを新規作成してください。

   キー: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
   値: CrashOnCtrlScroll
   タイプ: REG_DWORD
   設定値: 1

4. ゲスト OS を再起動し、上記設定変更を反映させます。

以上で完全メモリダンプの設定は終了になります。現象発生時に下記の
「完全メモリダンプ取得手順」にてダンプをご取得お願いいたします。

For its contribution to the regional revitalisation programme of Ehime Prefecture, Microsoft Japan was recognised at this year’s Nikkei Social Initiative Awards. The Awards was established by leading newspaper company Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) to recognise initiatives to alleviate social needs, and has honoured many outstanding corporations, nonprofits and individuals who have made a difference to Japan.

Working with local governments is not new to Microsoft Japan, which has been participating in public-private partnerships since creating the Local Community Revitalisation Programme in 2009.

Microsoft Japan's contribution to the regional revitalisation programme of Ehime Prefecture was recognised at this year's Nikkei Social Initiative Awards.

In the Microsoft-Ehime Prefecture collaboration, one of the key initiatives was the Ehime Marugoto Bike Roads project, designed to promote the prefecture as an important destination for cycling expeditions.

A key factor for the project’s success was the creation of a cloud-based website, leveraging Microsoft Azure cloud service to provide updated information on cycling routes through the use of GPS and other dynamic content. An interactive service along each route sends feedback from cyclists and local residents to the prefecture’s blogs.

The website is operated by Busystem, a local nonprofit providing ICT-related employment assistance to enable people with disabilities to work from home. Microsoft provided advanced cloud computing training to the website administrators.

In another project, Microsoft Japan supported Ehime University to offer advanced software development training—including C# programming and Windows Store app development—to students and engineers from small companies.

Busystem’s General Manager, Toshihiro Kawasaki, said, “In collaboration with Microsoft and our nonprofit partners, we have made good progress in the revitalisation of the local community. Through the collaboration, we gained the opportunity to learn technologies such as Dynamics CRM and Office 365. Both cloud technologies enable new workstyles for our nonprofit staff, and allow them to manage projects across the country.”

As Microsoft continues to work with Ehime Prefecture, it is also pursuing collaboration with other local governments such as Toshima City, Tsukuba City and Ibaraki Prefecture. The projects are wide-ranging in nature, including the creation of a digital system to manage public health records, providing technologies for teaching in schools and IT skills training and employment assistance.

The diverse nature of Microsoft Japan’s involvement emphasises the multifaceted role that corporations can play in society. We can’t wait to see the results that will emerge in the near future. Gambatte (Japanese for “keep it up”), Microsoft Japan!

In the last OEM Australia video update I included a demonstration of one of the new capabilities in Windows 10 that I’m a big fan of, whic is the ability to join Azure Active Directory. Here I’ll do a quick walk through of what you see on the Windows 10 client, and what needs to be configured in Azure Active Directory and Intune to allow this to occur.

First up, this screen is presented at the end of a Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise installation if the device has network connectivity. If there is no network connectivity, you will be prompted to create a local account as that will be your only way to sign in. Because these screenshots are from Enterprise, you will also notice that there is no Microsoft Account prompt to be seen. At this point choose the Join Azure AD option and click next.

At this screen you can enter the credentials you normally use to access Microsoft Online Services that leverage Azure Active Directory, such as Office 365, CRM Online, Microsoft Intune, Azure Rights Management Service etc

Once you enter your credentials and your password click on Sign In.

Depending on how, or if, your organisation synchronises your on-premises Active Directory with Azure Active Directory, you may see this log in screen. This screen is presented in this particular environment because AAD Connect is being used for synchronisation, but Active Directory Federation Services is providing the authentication services.

Once the user is authenticated, device enrolment starts taking place. This is normally a fairly quick process.

Once device enrolment is complete, you are presented with the default Windows 10 screens.

When you get to the login screen, enter the credentials you used to Azure Active Directory Join the device can now be used to log in.

At this point the usual end user first sign in experience kicks off.

Including the setting up your apps screen, which can vary in length based on the performance of the PC, and what else may have been loaded into the image.

While users don’t have to use a PIN, you can prompt for a PIN, which will become much more important moving forward with the Passport updates that are coming from Microsoft.

Next we are prompted for a multi-factor authentication option.

Clicking Pick a verification method presents a drop down list of the options

These are text message, phone call and mobile app. Choose the one that makes most sense for you and that will work in most of the environments you will be working from. In my case phone and text aren’t always available, but data always is, so I’ll select Mobile app. Make sure you have installed the Azure Authenticator app on your Windows, iOS or Android device in order to proceed.

We can then scan the QR code from the app or manually enter the code and the provided URL to authenticate on our mobile device.

Once verification is complete, we see that the app is successfully set up, and we can click on next.

Now we are prompted that corporate policies will be enforced on this device, such as ensuring password policies are met, lock screen requirements and allowable sign in methods, for example.

We are now prompted to receive verification via phone or the Azure Authenticator app we have already setup.

We enter the code we receive and click next.

We can now add phone as a secondary authentication method in case we lose our phone with the configured app.

Now it’s time to create the PIN we were advised about earlier, and you have the ability to customise the requirements depending on the need of your organisation.

In this case a 4 (minimum) digit PIN is required, numbers only, which is what most people would be used to at this point.

Once matching PINS are entered, we land at on the Windows 10 desktop.

Checking system properties first, note that this machine is not domain joined in the traditional manner, which raises the question how do we check if it has successfully joined Azure Active Directory.

That’s not a difficult task, we go into Settings.

Then select System, About, and here you can see the organization association with emsadfs, the domain that I logged in from.

Earlier it was mentioned that policies would be enforced on the device, and here I will highlight an Intune policy that has been applied by launching Windows Defender.

You can see that this action has been restricted, and while it doesn’t give the user any details on the exact mechanism being used, you can see that it at least tells them that it is something that has been set up the system administrator.

In the next post I’ll cover the behind the scenes Azure Active Directory and Intune settings I have enabled to allow the above Azure Active Directory Join scenario to succeed.

Log Parser について

Log Parser は汎用的なテキスト ベースのデータを解析するためのツールです。Log Parser はコマンドラインから、または COM オブジェクトとして登録しプログラムから利用することができます。
Log Parser は Windows のイベントログ、IIS ログ、レジストリ、CSV ファイル、TSV ファイル、XML ファイルなど色々なフォーマットのデータをパースできます。そして、パースしたデータを SQL に近い形でフィルタ、ソート、グループ化し解析に役立てることができます。

例えば Exchange サーバーのメッセージ追跡ログは CSV ファイル形式のため、以下のように処理することができます。
ここでは UTC 時間で 9/18 - 9/19 までの期間で total-bytes が大きいものトップ 3 を降順に出力しています。

各引数の意味は以下のようになります。

   -i: インプットとなるファイル形式。ここでは csv となります。
   -o: アウトプットのファイル形式。
   -nSkipLines: インプット ファイルから読みこみをスキップする行数。メッセージ追跡ログでは最初の 4 行はメタデータであるためスキップしています。
   
その他パラメータや、利用できる SQL 構文や関数については Log Parser に付属する logparser.chm を参照ください。
logparser.chm や Samples フォルダに多くのサンプルが紹介されています。

Log Parser Studio
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Log Parser Studio 2.0 は Log Parser を利用した GUI アプリケーションです。そのため当然 Exchange 以外のデータについても処理することができますが、こちらは Exchange のサポート チームによって作成されたツールであるため、 既定で Exchange 関連のログを処理するために多数のクエリが準備されています。そのため、仮に Log Parser を利用する場合においても、Exchange 関連のクエリを記述する際には参考になるかと思います。

This post continues the series that started here.

Up to this point I’ve discussed building a parser for Message Analyzer that will interpret DFSR debug logs. The last thing I want to cover is the construction of some charts. These charts will provide a view of message throughput over time – something I’ve found useful in the past.

Chart – DFSR Messages Over Time

The first thing I’ll need to do is create a new chart. I do this by selecting the Session menu and then selecting New Viewer–> New Chart.

After doing so, I get a new chart view and the chart editing dialog to its right.

I’ll start by replacing the chart Name with something descriptive on the Chart Layout tab and then move to the Component Layout tab. On the Component Layout tab I’ll provide a chart title and change my Type to a Timeline Chart .The rest of the options I’ll leave as defaults –

Moving to the Data tab I’ll begin by clicking the ellipsis next to Column Fields and then adding a formula that will count messages –

I then click the ellipsis next to Arguments, add an argument and populate its FieldName with the MessageText field from my DFSRMessage in my DFSRDebug log parser –

So far my chart is going to count MessageText instances (which occur in every message).

Back in the Data tab of the chart editing dialog, I’ll click the ellipsis next to Row Fields–

The first entity I choose plots a separate line for each distinct value in that field.

I’m interested in total DFSR message volume over time so I’ll choose a field that is the same in every message. All of my messages are parsed by the DFSRDebug log parser so I’m going to choose General–> Module (Module stores the name of the parser) –

Lastly, I add another entity which is Global Annotations–> TimeStamp (this field is necessary for a Timeline Chart) –

The chart now plots DFSR Messages over Time–

I can save the chart from Session–> Charts–> Save Chart.

強化された脆弱性緩和機能

脅威に対する耐性の 1 つとして、また攻撃コストを高めるため、Windows には、脆弱性を悪用した不正なコード実行を防ぐ (困難にする) いくつかの緩和機能が搭載されています。Windows のバージョンを重ねるごとに、そのときどきの悪用手法に対抗する機能が追加、強化されており、Windows 10 では、新たな機能として制御フロー ガードという緩和機能が追加されました。

悪用と緩和機能の歴史

Slammer や Blaster といった世界を震撼させた攻撃が台頭した 2003 年を境に、マイクロソフトは信頼できるコンピューティング (TwC) の名の下、セキュリティ開発ライフサイクル (SDL) を開始し、Windows XP SP2 では、脆弱性の悪用を防止 (難化) するいくつかの緩和機能を搭載しました。

攻撃者が脆弱性の悪用に成功するかは、悪用コードをメモリの正確な場所に配置できるかに依ります。データ実行防止 (DEP) は、メモリ上のコード実行可能領域を限定する (データ領域での実行を防止) ことで、攻撃者が不正なコードを挿入できる領域を狭め、実行を困難にします。Vista で導入されたアドレス空間レイアウトのランダム化 (ASLR) はアプリケーションのメモリ アドレスをランダム化することで、攻撃者による悪用コードの実行を困難にしています。

DEP や ASLR は非常に有効な機能ですが、残念ながらレガシ依存やアプリケーションとの互換性などから、Windows 7 以前では Windows の一部分のみで有効に機能している状態でした。これを受け、Windows 8 では互換性まわりの問題点を解決しシステム全体を通して利用できるように改善されています。また、ASLR 2.0 では、エントロピーを増やしたり、64 ビット メモリ アドレスへの適用により、ランダム化可能なメモリ領域の対象を増大し、ブルート フォース攻撃などへの耐性を強化しています。

コード ハイジャックを検出/遮断する制御フロー ガード

Windows 10 では、制御フロー ガード (CFG) という新たな緩和機能が追加されました。これは、ASLR をバイパスしようとする手法への対策として誕生しました。前述のように、ASLR はアプリケーションが実行されるメモリ アドレスをランダム化することで、攻撃者がコードを挿入して実行することを困難にします。しかし、たとえば、"Use after Free (開放済みメモリ使用) " などの手法を使うことで、攻撃者はアプリケーションがメモリのどの位置を使用しているかを特定でき ASLR をバイパスできてしまいます。

そこで誕生したのが CFG です。CFG は、正常な関数のみを呼び出すことで、不正な関数が読み込まれることを防ぎます。文字通り、アプリケーションのコードの流れ、連続性を監視し、コード ハイジャックなど非直接的なコールが実行される前に、安全で期待されるものであるかを検証し、不正と判断した場合はアプリケーションを終了することで、不正なコードが実行されるのを防ぎます。これにより、仮に ASLR がバイパスされるなどで悪用コードを挿入された場合でも、CFG がコード ハイジャックを検出し実行を防止するため、その先の重要情報の搾取や PC の遠隔操作といった実際の被害に至らずに済みます。セキュリティ強化の観点から、アプリケーションを CFG でコンパイルするよう、開発者の皆さんにも推奨しています。

おわりに

事実として、人間がコードを書く以上、脆弱性はついて回ります。開発段階での脆弱性を減らす努力と並行して、地味かもしれませんが、プラットフォームやアプリ自身が不正なコードを検出したり、実行させないという緩和技術のさらなる向上が、今後も期待されるところです。

Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, is here. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you already know that my new book, Windows PowerShell Step by Step, third edition, is on its way to the printers. I am not going to talk about that today—but it dawned on me as I was completing the final tasks for this book, that I did not talk about as much scripting in the book as I did, for example, in the Windows PowerShell 1.0 Step by Step book.

This is not because I don’t like to script. In fact, I love to write Windows PowerShell scripts. I am one of the few real scripting nerds in the world. I like to write scripts, and I do it for fun. But you see, I simply don’t have to write nearly as many scripts as I used to.

Quick! Without thinking, name five things you can do with Windows PowerShell 5.0 on Windows 10, with a single cmdlet—things that you had to write scripts to do in the past. Or you had to write a complicated command—or at the very minimum, you needed to remember an obscure WMI command.

I say Windows PowerShell 5.0 on Windows 10 because that is what I happen to be running. If I test something in my Windows PowerShell console, I can be assured that it will work in Windows PowerShell 5.0 on Windows 10. I am not assured that it will work in Windows PowerShell 3.0 installed on Windows 7. In fact, the odds are pretty well in my favor that it will NOT work in Windows PowerShell 3.0 on Windows 7. Or for that matter, in Windows PowerShell 5.0 installed on Windows 7.

The big watershed event for Windows PowerShell and for operating system automation came in Windows 8 on Windows Server 2012, where hundreds and hundreds of cmdlets (functions) were introduced into the operating system. These simply are not present in Windows 7, and they cannot be backported either.

So all of the way cool things that save me so very much time are not so much part of Windows PowerShell 5.0 or PowerShell 4.0, but they are actually part of the operating system. I am thinking of things like Get-NetAdapter:

In the past (and in Windows 7), I had to query the Win32_NetworkAdapter WMI class to find this information. I then cycled through all of those “bogus” network adapters that appeared, selected the appropriate properties from the dozens that do not return any information, and then interpreted some of the coded values. This actually can turn into a pretty complicated 20-line Windows PowerShell script. I know—I have written it.

There is another one of my favorite commands, the Get-Volume command (function), which displays information about NTFS volumes. With a short command, I can get volume information, and display it into a sortable graphical user interface window pane.

Speaking of sortable graphical user interface window panes...

One of my favorite cmdlets is the Out-GridView cmdlet. It makes filtering through information a breeze, and it is a great add-on for a script. In the past, creating something like this would have been a major difficulty—and again, I know because I wrote stuff to present GUIs.

The command to display volume information is shown here (ogv is an alias for Out-GridView):

Get-Volume | ogv

New cmdlets (functions) are not limited to only hardware. (However, we are in Windows 10 and the previous stuff was introduced three versions ago, so that is hardly new.)

Another really powerful feature was added to the Get-Content cmdlet a while ago (maybe in PowerShell 4.0). That is the –Tail parameter. By using the –Tail parameter, I can retrieve only the last however many lines from a text file. Again, this used to require some scripting, but now it is part of the cmdlet. Here is an example:

PS C:\> Get-Content .\fso\AMoreComplete.txt -Tail 1

and even more kinds of "stuff" like quotes.

I am not even going to talk about Desired State Configuration (DSC). I mean, using DSC is so easy, and while it is powerful most of the time, it is not doing stuff that I could not write a script to do. But it really makes stuff simple. I can write a very short DSC script, and it replaces some pretty hairy coding.

It is almost like the Windows PowerShell team is deliberately looking at situations where I used to have to write some pretty complicated code, and they are actually making it simple. In some cases, it is really, really simple. I can see a day (maybe not too far away) where I never have to write Windows PowerShell scripts again. Really, that is fine. It will give me more time to spend programing my drone—that is until they create a Windows PowerShell parrot module.

Hi everyone. This is just a small post to make an announcement. As many of you were waiting to upgrade your SQL servers, the Service Manager 2012 R2 with Update Rollup 7 installed, now officially supports Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2014.

We have done a fair amount of validation to make sure that everything continues to work as expected. That said, if there is anything which seems suspicious let us know via your comments below.
