Last week was a huge week for Microsoft as we lifted the covers on a heap of new features and experiences coming to Windows 10, took our first look at what Windows will look like on Phone, small tablets, huge touchscreens – aka Surface Hub – and then literally stepped inside Windows with HoloLens!
Already the reactions from the press and public are overwhelmingly positive!
Upgrading to Windows 10 will be free. Many have asked this question since the announcement of the first Technical Preview of Windows 10 and we’re happy to announce that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1. You’ll need to upgrade within the first year to take advantage of this offer though.
Continuous upgrading – Windows as a Service. Once you have Windows 10, it will be kept current for the supported lifetime of the device. No more wipe & reload! We do understand that businesses require choice in how updates are delivered, and at what pace. With Windows 10, businesses will still be able to pick the speed of innovation that is right for each group of their users, rather than rely on a one size fits all solution.
Cortana, Microsoft’s personal digital assistant, comes to PC and tablet for the first time. Along with all the cool things that Cortana can do, you will also be able to use dictation instead of typing on the keyboard!
Office universal apps on Windows 10. Bring the awesome power of the office suite with a consistent, touch-first experience across phone, tablet and PC.
A new web experience code named “Project Spartan”, the next generation browser was built with greater interoperability, reliability and discoverability, with a new look and feel built just for Windows 10.
HOLOGRAMS!!! This really stood out and “stole the show”. Imagine interacting with your Windows apps seamlessly alongside real life... Microsoft HoloLens is the new technology being enabled by Windows 10 and is set to change the way we view computing forever. More than augmented reality, more than virtual reality, more than just a heads up display – this is high definition holograms integrated with your real world, unlocking all-new ways to create, communicate, work and play! There were many more announcements– Continuum, Xbox Live and the new Xbox App, and the Surface Hub device, for example. Not enough space to cover everything here! Try it out! Over the next week a new preview, a new ISO, of Windows 10 will be rolled out to Windows Insiders. If you’re not currently an Insider, head over and sign up! We’re also expecting to see the first technical preview for Phone later in February so watch this space :)
