What do you do when your ConfigMgr OSD boot images are corrupt? Its something most of us have faced at one time or another, maybe this is your first time dealing with it, but the steps to recovery are not that hard and not as far away as you would believe. Below you will find a walk through I wrote up to help you do just that, and get you back to ground zero aka the state in which things are back to a starting point.
Boot Image Versions:
WinPE 5.0 = 6.2.9200.XXXXX
WinPE 5.1 = 6.3.9600.XXXXX
Resetting ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Boot Images to ground zero:
1. Open the ConfigMgr 2012 Console
2. Reset the boot images with following steps
(Remove Drivers from x64 Boot Image):
Navigate to Software Library \ Operating Systems \ Boot Images
1. Select the Boot Image (x64), right click and select properties
2. Select the Drivers tab:
a. Note the drivers via screen shot(s)
b. Remove all drivers listed
3. Click the Apply button, this will:
a. Mount WIM and remove drivers
b. Commit WIM and update Distribution Points
4. Assure the process completes with zero failures
5. Wait until all Distribution Points are updated
(Re-add Drivers to x64 Boot Image):
Navigate to Software Library \ Operating Systems \ Boot Images
1. Select the Boot Image (x64), right click and select properties
2. Select the Drivers tab:
a. Click the Yellow Star to add drivers
b. Only add Ethernet Network drivers
(Wireless and Storage \ Chipset drivers are not needed in the Boot Image)
(If supporting Surface Pro's, please make sure to add the Network drivers for the Ethernet Adapters as well)
3. Click the Apply button, this will:
a. Mount WIM and remove drivers
b. Commit WIM and update Distribution Points
4. Assure the process completes with zero failures
5. Wait until all Distribution Points are updated
(Remove Drivers from x32 Boot Image):
Navigate to Software Library \ Operating Systems \ Boot Images
1. Select the Boot Image (x32), right click and select properties
2. Select the Drivers tab:
a. Note the drivers via screen shot(s)
b. Remove all drivers listed
3. Click the Apply button, this will:
a. Mount WIM and remove drivers
b. Commit WIM and update Distribution Points
4. Assure the process completes with zero failures
5. Wait until all Distribution Points are updated
(Re-add Drivers to x32 Boot Image):
Navigate to Software Library \ Operating Systems \ Boot Images
1. Select the Boot Image (x32), right click and select properties
2. Select the Drivers tab:
a. Click the Yellow Star to add drivers
b. Only add Ethernet Network drivers
(Wireless and Storage \ Chipset drivers are not needed in the Boot Image)
(If supporting Surface Pro's, please make sure to add the Network drivers for the Ethernet Adapters as well)
3. Click the Apply button, this will:
a. Mount WIM and remove drivers
b. Commit WIM and update Distribution Points
4. Assure the process completes with zero failures
5. Wait until all Distribution Points are updated
Importing new Boot Images:
1. Navigate to the ADK 8.1 directory
◾C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\amd64\en-us
◾C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\en-us
2. Copy the boot.wim files from the above two directories to a network share
3. Import x64 Boot Image into ConfigMgr 2012 via the following steps:
a. Open the ConfigMgr 2012 Console
b. Navigate to Navigate to Software Library \ Operating Systems \ Boot Images
c. Right click Boot Images and select Add Boot Image
d. Enter the UNC path to the new x64 Boot WIM
e. Name Boot Image (x64) v2
f. Complete the Import Wizard
4. Import x32 Boot Image into ConfigMgr 2012 via the following steps:
a. Open the ConfigMgr 2012 Console
b. Navigate to Navigate to Software Library \ Operating Systems \ Boot Images
c. Right click Boot Images and select Add Boot Image
d. Enter the UNC path to the new x32 Boot WIM
e. Name Boot Image (x32) v2
f. Complete the Import Wizard
