MISSISSAUGA, ON – On Friday, April 24, 2015, Microsoft Canada will host approx. 100 girls between the ages of 14 and 17 from across the GTA for a day-long skills development and mentorship conference in Mississauga. These future innovators and leaders will be joined by her Worship, Bonnie Crombie, Mayor of Mississauga and Microsoft Canada Vice-Presidents, Staci Tracey Meagher and Mary-Ellen Anderson.
What:
DigiGirlz is part of Microsoft YouthSpark, a global commitment to empowering young people with opportunities for acquiring the training and tools they need to succeed in employment and entrepreneurship in our increasingly digital economy.
The day will include a tour of the Microsoft Technology Centre, breakout sessions on how to build an application, an introduction to coding and Xbox, and a panel discussion on careers in technology with Microsoft employees.

Technology holds tremendous opportunity for people around the world to do more and achieve more in their lives. However, young people are facing an opportunity divide – a gap between those who have access to the skills and opportunities they need to succeed and those who do not.
Women, in particular, are dramatically underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Seven in10 girls are interested in STEM, but only two in 10 will pursue a career in a STEM field.
Microsoft wants to help change that by inspiring female youth to pursue their interest in STEM. That’s what next Friday is all about.
