Technology moves so fast these days, it can be hard to keep a perspective on the changes. At Microsoft Research’s Machine Learning Summit this morning in Paris, one of the keynoters took a stab, identifying six major waves of computing. Today most of us feel the effects of the fifth wave, where smartphones combined with the cloud are the predominant technology.

What’s next? It’s already begun: the age of ubiquitous computing and machine learning. During this wave, says Hermann Hauser, co-founder of Amadeus Capital Partners, the objects we buy will increasingly include embedded technology that delivers useful new functionality. We’re already seeing this in cars and thermostats, for instance, and the examples are snowballing.

“It really makes the Internet, the everyday things you interact with, much more user friendly, much more human,” Hauser says.

Read more about Hauser’s keynote and return to Inside Microsoft Research for further posts from this week’s event.
