Microsoft 365 empowers developers to build intelligent apps for where and how the world works

At our Build 2018 conference, Satya Nadella and Scott Guthrie talked about the vision and strategy of rationalizing Microsoft's platform into an intelligent cloud and intelligent edge, enlightened by AI and mixed reality and architected for the modern computing landscape. We also shared with you, our developer community, the unique opportunities with Microsoft 365 in today's multi-sense, multi-device world. For years, we have been at Build talking about the huge opportunity with Windows and Office as developer platforms. In fact, we currently have 135 million commercial monthly active users of Office 365 and nearly 700 million Windows 10–connected devices. But Microsoft's mission is fundamentally dependent on how well we TOGETHER can harness the power of both Windows and Office in the Microsoft 365 platform. This post summarizes several announcements at Build 2018 across the following areas: (1) New Microsoft 365 experiences that empower customers to achieve more, and (2) New opportunities for developers with Microsoft 365.

Build and manage tailored apps for the enterprise using the Teams developer platform

At Build 2018, Microsoft Teams announced a range of new capabilities and integrations to build and manage tailored apps for your enterprise using the Teams developer platform. Tailoring your teamwork is now even easier through new integrations and shared developer capabilities experiences with other Office 365 applications, including SharePoint and Outlook. We are excited to announce the preview of the Teams app for the Microsoft Store. This release marks an important step in our ongoing efforts to support Progressive Web App (PWA) capabilities in Windows, using Edge based rendering and combining web technologies with native OS capabilities to deliver an innovative new experience. As a Store app, it is installed and managed through the Microsoft Store, supports the Narrator screen reader, and integrates with the Windows 10 Action Center. For Public Preview, the Teams Store app is only available for Windows 10 S / S-mode devices. We also outlined opportunities in four areas to "do more" with tailored Teams apps.

Sway smarter—get to know your readers with Analytics

How many times have you created and shared a Sway with coworkers or classmates, then wondered whether how many readers read through to the end? No more—now you can Sway smarter with Analytics, available to Office 365 subscribers on Sway.com and Sway for Windows 10. Using Analytics, Office 365 subscribers can see a breakdown of the number of readers who glanced at a Sway, who gave it a quick read, and who sat down and gave it a deep read. Office 365 subscribers can also see the average time spent on each Sway and average completion, which is smartly calculated based on how much readers interacted with that Sway's content. Where the Analytics view shines is with the newsletter. Imagine that you use Sway each month to send out a newsletter to your company. You start the newsletter from a Sway template that you previously created— you branded it with your company's colors and logo—which makes it a breeze to recycle structure and formatting. After getting your monthly newsletter into tiptop shape, you share it with your entire company. After sharing your Sway, you can watch the total views roll in and see metrics like: (1) How many readers opened the Sway and quickly scrolled through the text, (2) How many readers interacted with the content to understand the material, and (3) How far most readers got through the material. All data is anonymized and compliant with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Analytics shows all Sways with reader activity starting from April 3, 2018.
