You’d have to be among the walking dead to not know how hot zombies are, and have been, for a while. And although the movie “World War Z” opens Friday for more passive viewers, gamers who’d rather be actively involved with surviving the zombie apocalypse paid for more than half a million “State of Decay” downloads in the week following its June 5 release.

Microsoft Studios and Undead Labs says this makes it the fastest selling original game on Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA).

You can download the free trial or purchase "State of Decay" for 1,600 Microsoft Points (MSP) from the Xbox Live Marketplace today.

Xbox Wire sat down with Jeff Strain, founder and executive producer at Undead Labs, to talk about the milestone and find out what's next for "State of Decay."

He told Xbox Wire, “We didn't know what to expect. ‘State of Decay’ breaks a lot of rules. Permadeath, switching characters, having to manage the ‘feelings’ of your fellow survivors, offline progression — these are all things developers traditionally avoid, but we felt were essential to creating a true survival experience. We're thrilled and humbled that gamers are embracing the game.”

Strain also talks passionately about the zombie genre, which isn’t surprising given that developer Undead Labs is based in Seattle, a city that regularly competes for the world record for zombie walks. He also reveals news that “State of Decay” fans should welcome: that they’re currently “working on a PC version” and “continue to issue Title Updates at a fast pace to refine game balance and fix bugs.”
