On July 10, Microsoft shared the good work going on with CityNext, a global initiative empowering cities, businesses and citizens to re-imagine their futures and cultivate vibrant communities.
One example of a city tapping into emerging technologies for cloud, mobile, data analytics, and social solutions and putting the principles of the CityNext Initiative into practice is Hamburg. But the first step toward a thriving, sustainable and livable urban center is in empowering its people.
With 1,900 employees working on both ships and land, Germany’s Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) needed a way to empower them to do their jobs more effectively using mobile devices loaded with familiar Microsoft Office 365 apps. They started doing so with 500 users’ devices in February and in a second wave, another 1,400 employees will receive those installations.
In a second phase, online versions of Exchange and SharePoint were deployed for messaging and collaboration.
In just a few months, HPA saw some great results, including: enhanced productivity on land and water, fewer disruptions during upgrades, four times faster software deployment and improved emergency response thanks to streaming updates.
