Predictability of performance has been an Achilles heel for business-critical cloud applications. That’s about to change. Earlier this month at the Worldwide Partner Conference in Houston, Microsoft Cloud and Enterprise Executive Vice President Satya Nadella announced a new Premium service for Windows Azure SQL Database that will bring flexibility and choice across on-premises and the cloud for business-class applications. Today, the preview for that service went live.

Windows Azure SQL Database Premium guarantees a fixed amount of capacity by creating a reserve that is not shared with any other database. It essentially removes peak load, concurrent requests, or latency predictability limitations that modern business applications have struggled with in the past.

In their post, the SQL Server team said they’re excited to see how the new Premium service for SQL Database helps businesses drive even greater innovation and raise the bar on the types of modern business applications they bring to the cloud.
