Checklist when configuring User Profiles Service Application

$

0

Hi everyone, this is just a quick list to take in mind when configuring User Profiles Service Application:

For the Service Application:

  • You have started at least one User Profile Service Instance
  • You have included the service application in the connection list for the web applications, or put it in the default associations

For the Sync Service Instance

  • You have the farm account included in the local Administrators group. You need this only in the server that will run the service instance.
  • If you haven´t and you have just done it, restart the server

For the Syncrhonization to be completed:

For the my sites:

  • Create the web application and a site collection in its root managed path (/) using the my site host template. (There are more options, but I leave this as the most common).
  • The web application should have the "personal" wildcard managed path and the self service site creation enabled.
  • At the user profile service application configuration page, ensure you have entered the web application url in the my site host.

For the pictures from AD

  • Check that you have created the map for the picture profile property to the thumnailPhoto AD attribute.
  • If you haven't, do so and perform a full synchronization again. Check that you have pictures at the my site host site collection (by browsing into it's content).
  • After that, if the pictures still does not appear, execute the Update-SPProfilePhotoStore command under the farm account credentials, or a user that has enough access to it or you will have a "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".

Using PowerShell ISE Snippets to Remember Tricky Syntax

$

Summary: Use Windows PowerShell ISE code snippets to ease the burden of tricky-to-remember syntax.

Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, is here. Today Jonathan Medd, Windows PowerShell MVP, is with us to share some Windows PowerShell goodness.

Take it away, Jonathan…

Often when I am teaching students who are new to Windows PowerShell, one of their complaints (apart from my poor jokes during the class) is, “How do I remember which of these braces and brackets to use for the different types of things I am trying to do?” For instance, they quite regularly get mixed up about when to use parentheses: ()—and when to use braces: {}.

There isn’t always a simple answer, and I usually tell them that a lot of learning a programming language is like learning a foreign spoken language—there are some things you just have to learn, and you will only remember them through practice and experience.

Having said that, one practical piece of advice I give them is to use code snippets within the Windows PowerShell ISE to help with code syntax they are finding difficult to remember. Code snippets are (typically) commonly used standardized short pieces of code that you can insert into your script by picking from a list.

Note Code snippets are typically available in scripting IDEs, and since Windows PowerShell 3.0, they have become easier to use, manage, and create your own. In this post, I’m going to concentrate on the Windows PowerShell ISE; however, you should be able to apply most of these suggestions to other scripting editors.

For example, let’s say that you struggle to remember which type of brackets you need at which point of a foreach statement. Is it the parentheses or the braces?

Within the Windows PowerShell ISE, use the shortcut key Ctrl-J or navigate to Edit\Start Snippets.

Image of menu

This will give you a list of predefined code snippets that ship with Windows PowerShell. For our example, find the foreach snippet and choose it.

Image of menu

The piece of code required for a foreach loop will be inserted into the script pane for you. So there is no need for you to remember which type of brackets were required where for this piece of syntax!

Image of command output

Now amend the variable names that are appropriate for what you are working with, and insert the code you need in between the {} braces.

Image of command output

What if you want to create a snippet of your own because what you need isn’t in the default list of ISE snippets? Handily, since Windows PowerShell 3.0, we have the New-IseSnippet cmdlet to help us.

First though, we need to have a quick look at where code snippets are stored. When you open the Windows PowerShell ISE, it will look for a Snippets folder within your Windows PowerShell profile location, typically C:\Users\username\Documents\WindowsPowerShell .

When you use the New-IseSnippet cmdlet, it will create the Snippets folder for you the first time you create a snippet with it. Or, if you want to create this folder, use the following command:

New-Item (Join-Path (Split-Path $profile.CurrentUserCurrentHost) "Snippets") -ItemType Directory

Image of command output

One area of Windows PowerShell syntax that my students typically have trouble remembering is operators. For instance, when comparing values, we may need to use some of the following operators:

-eq

-gt

-lt

and not:

=

As is more common in other languages, there is no doubt that when starting with Windows PowerShell, these are not easy to remember. So why not create a few snippets for them?

The following uses of the New-IseSnippet cmdlet will create snippets for three common operators.

Note I have used the parameter CaretOffset. This will place the cursor at the end of the text to insert. Consequently, you will be able to immediately carry on typing after inserting the snippet.

New-IseSnippet -Title "Equals Operator" -Description "Equals Operator" -Text "-eq " -CaretOffset 4

New-IseSnippet -Title "Greater Than Operator" -Description "Greater Than Operator" -Text "-gt " -CaretOffset 4

New-IseSnippet -Title "Less Than Operator" -Description "Less Than Operator" -Text "-lt " -CaretOffset 4

Now, if we are at a point where we need to add the Equals operator, we can pull up the snippets list, and insert our custom Equals Operator snippet.

Image of menu

The text -eq is inserted, and the cursor is placed at the end of the line.

Image of command output

If you look in your Snippets folder now, you will see an XML file that was created for each snippet by New-IseSnippet. These are fully portable; so potentially, they are easy to share with others. Simply send the snippet to someone else and have them copy the XML files into their own Snippets folder. (If you are a bit handy with XML, you can also create them in this manner.)

Image of menu

Here’s the XML to generate the Equals operator snippet:

    <Snippets  xmlns='http://schemas.microsoft.com/PowerShell/Snippets'>

        <Snippet Version='1.0.0'>

Equals Operator

Equals Operator

                <SnippetTypes>

                    <SnippetType>Expansion</SnippetType>

                </SnippetTypes>

    </Snippet>

</Snippets>

That was quite a straightforward example, but how about if you want to add some code that spans multiple lines? Personally, I can never remember the syntax to check if a parameter has been supplied by using $PSBoundParameters. One nice way to do that is to create a Here-String with your code snippet in like this:

$Snippet = @'

if ($PSBoundParameters.ContainsKey('Something')){

}

'@

Then use the New-IseSnippet cmdlet to create the snippet with the $Snippet variable:

New-IseSnippet -Title "Check PSBoundParameters" -Description "Check PSBoundParameters" -Text $Snippet

We can now choose this code snippet from the menu:

Image of menu

And it appears before our eyes…

Image of command output

There you have it. I hope this piece on code snippets helps you and gives you some ideas about how you can save time (and your memory) when writing Windows PowerShell script.

Tip of the Day: Validating a Single Disk in Cluster

Today’s tip…

Windows Server 2012 can select individual disks for cluster validation. It was not possible previously as all the disk in available storage were tested on running validation. Now, we can just test individual disk by taking it out from cluster and running validation onto it.

Troubleshooting File Server Networking Issues in Windows Server 2012 R2

$
0
0

In this blog post, I’m sharing a few troubleshooting tips related to File Server Networking in Windows Server 2012 R2.

For each one, I first describe the issue that is commonly reported, followed by a quick explanation of the root cause of the issue and finally a way to solve it.

Let me know if those are helpful and feel free to share your own issues related to File Server Networking using the comments.

1. Make sure your network interfaces are RSS-capable

Issue:

  • Certain 10GbE NICs won’t perform as well as others
  • Multichannel might not aggregate multiple 10GbE in certain configurations

Cause

  • Some 10GbE NICs show as non-RSS capable. Without RSS, SMB uses 1 TCP connection.
  • If mixing RSS and non-RSS NICs, Multichannel will use only the RSS-capable NICs

Solution (both are complete solutions, choose one)

2. Use Multiple VNICs on the host

Issue

  • When using a VNIC on the host, I cannot achieve maximum performance.
  • This is noticeable when using 10GbE NICs RSS-capable NICs and/or NIC Teaming.

Cause

  • The VNIC on the host is not RSS capable. Without RSS, SMB uses only 1 TCP connection.

Solution

3. SMB prefers slow NIC to faster VNICs

Issue

  • When using a VNIC on the host, SMB prefers a slower physical NIC to the VNIC.
  • This is important when using 10GbE NICs RSS-capable NICs and/or NIC Teaming.

Cause

  • The VNIC on the host is not RSS capable and the physical NIC is RSS capable.
  • SMB will always prefer RSS NICs to non-RSS NICs, even if at slower speeds.

Solution (both are complete solutions, choose one)

  • Disable the RSS-capability of the physical NIC
  • Use SMB Multichannel Constraints to prefer the VNICs

4. More TCP connections for SMB inside a VM

Issue

  • In Windows Server 2012, I got 1 TCP connection per VMNIC. In R2 I now get 4.
  • Why has this changed? Is there a problem?

Cause

  • With the new Virtual RSS feature, VMNICs now report themselves as RSS-capable.

Solution

  • This is by design. Enjoy the increased performance...

5. More connections to a Scale-Out File Server

Issue

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 creates more connections to Scale-out File Servers.
  • Why has this changed? Is there a problem?

Cause

  • Windows Server 2012 used one set of connections per Scale-Out File Server.
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 uses one set of connections per Share on a SOFS,
when this helps avoid server-side redirection (typical case: Mirrored Storage Spaces)

Solution

  • This is by design. Enjoy the increased performance...

6. Use multiple subnets when deploying SMB Multichannel in a cluster

Issue

  • When using multiple NICs on the same subnet in a cluster, only one is used

Cause

  • Cluster networking won’t use more than one NIC per subnet
  • You can confirm by using the cmdlet Get-SmbServerNetworkInterface

Solution

7. Update firmware and driver for your NICs

Issue

  • I’m using an RDMA NIC, but SMB reports the NIC as not RDMA capable.

Cause

  • NICs with older firmware or driver might not report themselves correctly.

Solution

8. How much traffic needs to pass between the SMB Client and Server before Multichannel actually starts?

Issue

  • SMB3 always starts with single TCP/IP then moves to multiple TCP/IP or RDMA.
  • Concern with timing of initial handshake and speed of transition to faster behavior.

Cause

  • SMB Multichannel is used to discover RSS and RDMA capabilities.
  • For server SKUs, Multichannel starts on the first read or write operation.
  • For client SKUs, Multichannel won’t start unless you’re doing some amount of work.

Solution (both are complete solutions, choose one)

9. Can I use SMB3 storage without RDMA?

Issue

  • Concern around performance of SMB3 without RDMA NICs

Cause

  • We have talked so much about RDMA...

Solution (both items contribute to the solution)

10. Is it possible to run SMB Direct from within a VM?

Issue

  • Running file server or SQL Server in a VM
  • Desire to use RDMA networking from the guest

Cause

  • Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 cannot do RDMA to the guest

Solution (both are complete solutions, choose one)

11. Use Client Access network for CSV Traffic

Issue

  • Limited performance when accessing a scale-out file server in Windows Server 2012
  • Happens when client hitting non-owner node and redirection is required

Cause

  • The client access network is high speed RDMA but the cluster network is not
  • Redirection is happening over cluster network only (usually a 1GbE NIC)

Solution (both are complete solutions, choose one)

12. Single file copy performance

Issue

  • Limited performance when copying a single large file to a scale-out file server
  • Using a 10GbE connection, can only achieve less than 150MB/sec throughput

Cause

  • File extension done in 1MB increments, serialized in write-trough mode
  • This leads to loss of the asynchronous nature of SMB2/3

Solution (both items contribute to the solution)

Weekend Scripter: Modify DNS Settings via Windows PowerShell

$

Summary: Guest blogger, Gershon Levitz, talks about modifying DNS settings with Windows PowerShell.

Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, is here. Today we have a new guest blogger, Gershon Levitz. Gershon is a senior technical writer for Hyper-V at Microsoft.

The floor is yours, Gershon...

There are times when I need to change the DNS settings and use specific DNS servers. Then after I am done, I want to go back and use the DNS settings provided by DHCP. I can make these changes manually, but it would require a number of manual steps. Because I needed to do this on a regular basis, I investigated how to automate this by using Windows PowerShell.

Being fairly new to Windows PowerShell, I thought this was going to be a simple exercise—similar to writing a batch script. The actual Windows PowerShell cmdlets are fairly simple. However, I still needed to figure out how to run a Windows PowerShell script (ExecutionPolicy) and how to create a shortcut to the script file so that I could double-click an icon to run the scripts.

I created two simple Windows PowerShell scripts, one to modify the DNS settings to use specific DNS servers and another to set the DNS settings to automatic. In this blog post, I will walk you through the steps to create these scripts, and the steps needed to run the scripts from shortcuts without having to open a Windows PowerShell session.

Identify the name of the adapter

The first thing you need to find out is the name of the adapter that you want to change. To list the network adapters, run the Get-NetAdapter Windows PowerShell cmdlet. In my case, the adapter name that I want to modify is Wi-Fi.

Image of command output

Script #1: Modify DNS server settings

This script will set the Wi-Fi adapter to use the following DNS servers:

  • DNS Server 1: 1.1.1.1
  • DNS Server 2: 2.2.2.2

If the adapter is set to get its IP address automatically from a DHCP server, the cmdlet only overrides the DNS settings that are received from the DHCP server, and the adapter will continue to receive its IP address from the DHCP server.

Note You need to run the following command from an elevated command prompt.

Notice that the value for the –InterfaceAlias parameter is the name of the adapter from the previous image. Replace 1.1.1.1 and 2.2.2.2 with the IP addresses of the DNS servers you want to use.

Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias Wi-Fi -ServerAddresses "1.1.1.1","2.2.2.2"

After running the command, run GetNetIPConfiguration to confirm the change to the DNS servers.

Image of command output

Or you can use the Get-DnsClientServerAddress cmdlet.

Image of command output

After you have the syntax of the command, and it works as you want it to, copy the command to a file with an extension of .ps1, for example DNSCustom.ps1.

Script #2: Automatically get DNS setting from DHCP server

This script will set the DNS setting to automatic for the network adapter:

Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceAlias wi-fi -ResetServerAddresses

After running the command, run Get-DnsClientServerAddressto confirm the change to the DNS servers. When the DNS setting is set to automatic, the ServerAddress column is blank for the adapter.

Image of command output

After you have the syntax of the command, and it works as you want it to, copy the command to a file with an extension of .ps1, for example DNSDefault.ps1.

Allow Windows PowerShell scripts to run

To run Windows PowerShell scripts, you need to change the script execution policy.

For more information about the Windows PowerShell script execution policy, see:

To see the current policy, run the Get-ExecutionPolicy cmdlet.

Create shortcuts to each file

To run each script file (.ps1) that you created, you can create a shortcut with the following command:

%systemroot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe –file “path to the script file”

For example, if I saved my scripts to D:\scripts, I would create two shortcuts—one for each script file with the following locations:

  • %systemroot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe –file d:\scripts\DNSCustom.ps1
  • %systemroot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe –file d:\scripts\DNSDefault.ps1

Image of menu

Note If you have spaces in the path to the file, enclose the path in quotation marks.

The last step is to set the shortcuts to Run as administrator

  • Right-click the shortcut, and select Properties.
  • On the Shortcut tab, click Advanced.
  • On the Advanced Properties page, select Run as administrator.

Image of dialog box

Thank you, Gershon, for sharing your time and knowledge.

I invite you to follow me on Twitter and Facebook. If you have any questions, send email to me at scripter@microsoft.com, or post your questions on the Official Scripting Guys Forum. See you tomorrow. Until then, peace.

Gigapixel Panoramafotos mit Image Composite Editor von Microsoft Research

$

imageimage
Multi-Billion Pixel Panoramic Photo Shoot: Seattle, Part 1 of 2Multi-Billion Pixel Panoramic Photo Shoot: Seattle, Part 2 of 2

Ein eindrucksvolles Gesamtwerk.

Selbst Panoramafotos erstellen

Trend No. 1.

So schreibt Susan:

This concept, called the “Internet of Things,” is a hot topic among my customer conversations. Many businesses are uncovering efficiencies based on how connected devices drive decisions with more precision in their organizations. (…) understanding what data needs to be absorbed vs. ignored – is where the “Internet of Things” becomes real.”

Trend No. 2: Das Gegenteil von Bring Your Own

Susan schreibt:

“In my conversations with customers, business-ready, secure devices are getting so good that organizations are centrally deploying mobility solutions that are equally effective at work and play.

Trend No. 3: Das
Social Enterprise wi
rd erwachsen

Two years ago, customers would tell me that they were worried about social technologies in the workplace because there was too much risk and they didn’t see the reward. However, today I have a conversation on enterprise social in almost every meeting.”

Trend No. 4: Alle Jahre wieder kommt die Cloud

“Initially driven by the need to reduce costs, many enterprises saw cloud computing as a way to move non-critical workloads such as messaging and storage to a more cost-efficient, cloud-based model. However, the larger benefit comes from customers who identify and grow new revenue models enabled by the cloud.”

Ausfühlich sind Susan Hausers Worte im Microsoft Blog „The Fire House“ nachzulesen.

Wir freuen uns auf die CeBIT!

Introduction Windows DHCP server can perform registration of DNS records with the DNS server on the behalf of its clients. Windows Server 2012 R2 enhances this DNS registration functionality in DHCP server. It provides you more flexibility in registering clients with the DNS server. You can now configure the DHCP server to perform registration only for A records and not PTR records. You can now also configure a DNS suffix to register the clients that match a DHCP policy. Together these enhancements...(read more)

Sunday Surprise - Introducing new Transact-SQL eBook!

$

Good Sunday to you all,

As you may all remember, at the end of November Gokan Ozcifci published this blog post First TechNet Wiki Ninjas eBook: "The Wiki Ninjas Guide to SharePoint 2013". I really liked the idea of creating that book and immediately thought that we may want to follow this great initiative and create a Transact-SQL e-book. I added a comment to that blog post and was very pleasantly surprised a few days later by being contacted by Saeid Hasani who offered his help in book preparation.

So, I decided I'll take a role of the boss and let Saeid work on preparing the book :) which he did splendidly. Several weeks later we were discussing this new e-book in Skype Group and when Durval Ramos heard about our plans with the book, he got very excited about the idea and also joined our team.

So, now I am very happy to introduce our first Transact-SQL eBook which is created by combining many great SQL Server articles in TechNet Wiki.

This eBook consists of 49 articles written by 17 authors!

I hope you will enjoy this book which you can Download here (click on the link).

Happy reading!
