$

Exchange Server

 Eseutil /mk “chk ファイル名の絶対パス”

Eseutil /mk “E:Exchange ServerV15MailboxMDB01E01.chk”

Tip of the Day: Demystifying Software Defined Networking Terms – Network Isolation, Encapsulation, and Addressing

Today’s Tip…

n today’s installment of the Demystifying… series, we look at network isolation, encapsulation, and addressing terms.

Part 4: The Technologies

Terms in this tip include:

  • Network Isolation
  • VLANS
  • PVLANS
  • Tagging Methods
  • VxLAN
  • NVGRE
  • Provider Address (PA)
  • Customer Address (CA)
  • Virtual IPs (VIPs)
  • Dynamic IPs (DIPs)

Network Isolation, Encapsulation, and Addressing

Network Isolation – Network Isolation (not to be confused with Domain/Network Isolation using IPsec security policies) allows you to segment and run multiple networks on the same physical datacenter fabric with identical or overlapping IP address spaces without conflict.  Numerous methods are available to achieve network isolation including simple frame-tagging methods such as VLANs, or newer technologies such as NVGRE that use more advanced encapsulation methods.

Routing can be configured to allow communication between isolated networks, but you must be careful to implement measures to avoid conflict should overlapping address spaces exist.

Virtual LAN (VLAN) – Virtual LANs (VLANs), perhaps the most familiar method for providing network segmentation, works by creating a logical port-groupings on a switch and assigning a VLAN Identifier (VLAN ID).  These grouping are identified by a ‘tagging’ process, where a VLAN ID is inserted into the frame.  A side effect of this process is that the extra information extends the frame length, potentially exceeding the MTU (maximum transmission unit) on network devices.  VLANs are not typically used in modern software-defined datacenters due to limitations (by today’s standards) of scale.

PVLANS – Private VLANs (PVLANS) are an extension of the VLAN specification that allows you to further restrict ports assignments within a VLAN.  Essentially a group within a group, PVLANs allow you to control communications between sub-VLANs.

VLAN Tagging Methods – The Tagging methods used in VLANs support the partitioning of networks by inserting identifying information (tags) into a frame as it traverses the switch fabric.  Two common VLAN tagging methods include IEEE 802.1Q, which inserts a four-byte tag into the frame, and Cisco’s proprietary Inter-Switch Link protocol (ISL), which adds 32 bytes by encapsulating the original frame into a header and FCS (frame check sequence) trailer.

The Hyper-V virtual switch supports the IEEE 802.1Q standard.

Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN) – Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN) is a network virtualization technology that attempts to improve the scalability problems associated with large cloud computing deployments. It uses a VLAN-like encapsulation technique to encapsulate MAC-based OSI layer 2 Ethernet frames within layer 4 UDP packets, using 4789 as the default IANA-assigned destination UDP port number.

NVGRE – Hyper-V Network Virtualization supports Network Virtualization using Generic Routing Encapsulation (NVGRE) as the mechanism to virtualize IP addresses. In NVGRE, the virtual machine’s packet is encapsulated inside another packet. The header of this new, NVGRE-formatted packet has the appropriate source and destination provider area (PA) IP addresses. In addition, it has a 24-bit Virtual Subnet ID (VSID), which is stored in the GRE header of the new packet.

The following figure shows a GRE-encapsulated packet. On the wire, NVGRE-encapsulated packets look like IP-over-Ethernet packets, except that the payload of the outer IP header is a GRE-encapsulated IP packet (including the Ethernet header).

clip_image001

Figure: NVGRE Packet Encapsulation

Provider Address (PA) – A Provider Address (PA) is an IP address that is assigned to the Hyper-V host by the hoster or the datacenter administrators based on their physical network infrastructure. The PA appears in the packets on the network that are exchanged with the server running Hyper-V that is hosting the virtual machine. The PA is visible on the physical network, but not to the virtual machine.

Customer Address (CA) – A Customer Address (CA) is an IP address that is assigned to a virtual machine by the customer, based on their intranet infrastructure. This address enables the customer to exchange network traffic with the virtual machine as if it had not been moved to a public or private cloud. The CA is visible to the virtual machine and reachable by the customer.

clip_image002

Figure: CA/PA Example

Routing Domain Identifier (RDID) – In network virtualization, VM networks form an isolation boundary wherein the virtual machines are able to communicate with one another.  Each VM network is identified by a Routing Domain ID (RDID), which is assigned by datacenter administrators or datacenter management software, such as System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM). The RDID is a Windows GUID — for example, “{11111111-2222-3333-4444-000000000000}”.

Virtual Subnet ID (VSID) –Each VM network (see RDIDs) consists of one or more virtual subnets identified by a unique Virtual Subnet ID (VSID).  Each virtual subnet belongs to a single VM network (RDID).  VSIDs allow hosts to identify the customer virtual machine for any given packet, even though the PA’s and the CA’s on the packets may be identical.

Partnering for growth is all about ensuring you can continue to meet the needs of your customers’, by potentially finding the talent you need with another partner.

If you have excess capacity, you can increase your reach and profitability by finding partners that can help you drive the utilisation of your staff. If you lack capacity, you can connect with other partners that have the expertise to enable and expand your own solutions.

IDC predicts that cloud spending will exceed $500B by 2020*. In “Partner of the Future: 10 Transformations IT solutions providers must make” they outline ten specific areas that partners should consider when looking forward with their business – and aiming to ensure they remain successful both now, and looking towards 2020.*

Move over the generalist; step forward the specialist

Customers are looking for tailored solutions to meet their needs! How can you extend your portfolio to accommodate this? Added value is key (Services, managed services and IP replace “just” reselling technology) – it’s not just the IT contact within customers that needs attention – think about approaching business decision makers too. Customers look to you to create a holistic solution for your customer, to fulfil all of their needs.

Growing the portfolio of skills you provide could be one route – either training your existing team or recruiting fresh faces and effectively buying those skills / IP in.  But there’s an alternative, offered by connecting with other, like minded, partners that have the skills (IP / services / business insights) you’re looking for.  And in turn they may also be looking for qualities that you have.  The ‘do it yourself’ days fade into the past as you turn to a new world of collaboration.

Over the course of the next few months, we’ll be exploring the world of Partnering for Growth as we introduce quick and easy to digest materials and resources to help as you partner with others.

Whether you’re new to this, or a seasoned professional we hope there’ll be something of interest for everyone.  These hints, tips and guidance are here to help you, but the ultimate path you take is your decision and your destiny.

Checklist for starting out

You may choose to do some or all of these, or approach partnering in your own way:

Planning

  • Start with the end in mind; set a clear goal/outcome for what your partnering relationship should achieve
  • Define “what’s in this for my business”! That way when you’re meeting with prospective partners you know what you’re looking for
  • The negotiable and non-negotiable! Ensure you’re clear on what you’re prepared to negotiate on and what elements are non-negotiable

Search & Select

  • Define your criteria for the kind of organisation you want to work with:
    • Technical skills
    • Other skills (selling, change management etc.)
    • Knowledge pools (contacts, specialisms)
    • Organisational size
    • Attitude to partnering
    • Customer references
    • Audience access (customer reach) and insights
    • Culture and approach to business

Agreeing the basics

  • Define and agree the gives and gets for both parties
  • Ensure you’re comfortable that both parties have an offering that customers want
  • Confirm for yourselves that, commercially, the relationship can work

Setting up the relationship

  • Should there be a formal or informal contractual arrangement between you?
  • Don’t be afraid to agree up front the circumstances under which you may both (or separately) decide the relationship is not for you (better to have this discussion up front than further down the line!)
  • Write a simple plan together to ensure you’ve a common view of success and the outcomes
  • Think about the customer:
    • Who takes responsibility for the customer engagement side?  (Define who does this and on what basis)
    • Who supports the customer at and post-sale?
    • Who engages with them through the course of their lifecycle to ensure they stay with you?
    • What are the checkpoints to ensure the customer is – and remains – happy?
  • Define the commercials (if you agree any) and how these will be governed
  • Agree how you will review and adjust these commercials
  • Agree the requirements that each organisation has in terms of levelling their understanding and ability to represent each other’s offerings.  What training?  What support?
  • Agree a process for arbitration just in case of any problems
  • Are there additional resources needed on either side?
  • Determine how you will keep track to ensure you both have capacity to resource the customer?

Keeping connected

  • Define a regular set of meetings and reviews:
    • Reviewing customer progress / deals / outcomes
    • Reviewing the performance of the relationship and longer term sustainability

Boy of 11 builds drone

$

Bilal Ahmed is only 11 years old but what he lacks in years he makes up for in sheer talent and a love for robotics, driving this young boy from Pakistan to build his very own drone at the Microsoft Innovation Centre in Karachi.

In fact, Bilal who is currently a student at The City School in Karachi, has built a number of robots on multiple platforms. He hopes to one day develop a Bionic Suit which is a type of external robotic suit that helps paralysed people walk again, and also allows people to do more work using less effort and power.

Quite a big a dream for an 11 year old, but when you’ve already built a few robots and a fully functioning drone at such a young age, anything is possible.

soldering

Ozair Belal

Never too young to learn
Bilal’s love for programming stems from his father who encouraged the young boy to learn how to code from an early age.

Ozair Belal, from Developer Experience and Evangelism (DX) at the Microsoft Innovation Centre in Karachi, first noticed Bilal’s talent at a local robotic competition. Bilal’s father then contacted Ozair to support Bilal in learning a to integrate “Raspberry Pi 2” for his robots and drones.

“After interviewing Bilal to evaluate his technical skills and knowledge it was evident that the 11 year old had the potential to do great things,” says Ozair.

A keen hobbyist himself when it comes to building things that fly, Ozair decided to take Bilal under his wing by providing him with the mentorship and guidance to start building his own Quadcopter.

The result? A drone with military capabilities
Bilal’s drone can fly up to a height of 1500 feet and is similar to those used by security and defence agencies. It is made of aluminium and has a camera which can take photos and videos. It is programmed so that it reduces turbulence and is self-stabilising.

It also has GPS capabilities and automatic landing and take-off functionality. Live telemetry data and graphs can be viewed on a radio controller for post flight checks.

When asked why he decided to build this drone, the 11-year old said he wants to make the world a better place to live by learning how to combine man’s capabilities with robotics.

More about the Microsoft Innovation Centre in Karachi
It was at the Microsoft Innovation Centre where Bilal worked tirelessly after school to build his drone using Microsoft products such as Raspberry Pi 2, Visual Studio and Windows 10 IoT Core.

According to Ozair, the Microsoft Innovation Centres aim to create real opportunities for entrepreneurs and start-ups.

“It doesn’t matter if you are a recent graduate, high school student or an 11-year-old boy with a dream to build a drone, the Centre exists to empower people to develop their IT skills and pursue a job in any IT-related field,” he says.

“Bilal is proof that if you have a creative mind, an interest in robotics, engineering or programming, and the right support, tools and resources it is possible to achieve your dreams and do great things no matter how old you are,” adds Ozair.

2. Was ist Social Collaboration überhaupt?

  1. Suche nach Experten
  2. Austausch in Interessensgruppen
  3. Suche nach Wissen
  4. Mobiles Arbeiten
  5. Firmeninterne Informationen und Neuigkeiten
  6. Anträge und Formulare
  7. Kommunikation und Abstimmung im Team und
  8. den Austausch von Dokumenten.

BP_SocCol3

Tip of the Day: Demystifying Software Defined Networking Terms – Datacenter Hardware Technologies

$
0
0

Today’s Tip…

In today’s installment of the Demystifying… series, we look at……………………

Part 5: Datacenter Hardware Technologies

Terms in this tip include:

  • Converged Network Adaptors
  • Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA)
  • RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE)
  • Datacenter Bridging
  • Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ)
  • Load Balancing and Failover (LBFO)
  • Switch Embedded Teaming (SET)

Converged Network Adaptors – A Converged Network Adapter (CNA), also called a converged network interface controller (C-NIC), combines two different functions in single piece of hardware.  Converged NICs combine the functionality of both a fiber channel host bus adapter for connecting a server to a storage area network (SAN), and an Ethernet connection to connect the same server to a local area network (LAN).  In other words, it “converges” access to, respectively, a storage area network and a general-purpose computer network.

Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) – Implemented on hardware, Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) supports zero-copy networking by enabling the network adapter to transfer data directly to or from application memory, eliminating the need to copy data between application memory and the data buffers in the operating system. Such transfers require no work to be done by CPUs, caches, or context switches, and transfers continue in parallel with other system operations. When an application performs an RDMA Read or Write request, the application data is delivered directly to the network, reducing latency and enabling fast message transfer.

The high-throughput, low-latency communication provided by RDMA makes it ideal for network-intensive applications like networked storage or cluster computing.

RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) – RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) is a network protocol that allows remote direct memory access (RDMA) over an Ethernet network. Two RoCE versions exist, RoCE v1 and RoCE v2.  RoCE v1 uses the Ethernet protocol as a link layer protocol and hence allows communication between any two hosts in the same Ethernet broadcast domain. While RoCE v2 is a RDMA running on top of UDP/IP and can be routed.

Datacenter Bridging (DCB) – Data Center Bridging DCB is a suite of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards that enable Converged Fabrics in the data center, where storage, data networking, cluster IPC and management traffic all share the same Ethernet network infrastructure. DCB provides hardware-based bandwidth allocation to a specific type of traffic and enhances Ethernet transport reliability with the use of priority-based flow control. Hardware-based bandwidth allocation is essential if traffic bypasses the operating system and is offloaded to a converged network adapter, which might support Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI), Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) over Converged Ethernet, or Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). Priority-based flow control is essential if the upper layer protocol, such as Fiber Channel, assumes a lossless underlying transport.

Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ) – Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ) is a feature available to computers running Windows Server with the Hyper-V server role installed, that have VMQ-capable network hardware. VMQ uses hardware packet filtering to deliver packet data from an external virtual machine network directly to virtual machines, which reduces the overhead of routing packets and copying them from the management operating system to the virtual machine.

Load Balancing and Failover (LBFO) – Load Balancing and Failover logically combines multiple network adapters to provide bandwidth aggregation and traffic failover to prevent connectivity loss in the event of a network component failure. Load Balancing with Failover is also known as NIC Teaming in Windows Server 2012 / 2016.

Switch Embedded Teaming (SET) – Switch Embedded Teaming (SET) is an alternative NIC Teaming solution that you can use in environments that include Hyper-V and the Software Defined Networking (SDN) stack in Windows Server 2016.  SET integrates some NIC Teaming functionality into the Hyper-V Virtual Switch.

SET allows you to group between one and eight physical Ethernet network adapters into one or more software-based virtual network adapters. These virtual network adapters provide fast performance and fault tolerance in the event of a network adapter failure.

SET member network adapters must all be installed in the same physical Hyper-V host to be placed in a team.

Azure Maintenance

Q: (from Seth)

I’m working with a client on designing an Azure deployment for them and the question came up of how often are there scheduled maintenance windows in Azure and how can we decide who should get notifications about these maintenance windows.

A:

Although we’d love for it to be perfect, it’s software and maintenance must happen. The goal is to minimize the impact to the customer. The use of Availability Sets is obviously one way the customer can mitigate the impact, Here is a great blog post on some details on our maintenance process and communication. Don’t let the title distract you, the concepts apply to all of our virtual machines:

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-linux-planned-maintenance/

To summarize key points:

  • The maintenance that we are discussing applies to the underlying virtualization host environment of Azure, NOT the specific OS instances. Once an image has been created, the OS instance maintenance for patches and updates is up to you.
  • We try to minimize the number of Azure maintenance cycles to minimize the customer impact. We’ve also have worked hard to make the maintenance cycle as quick as possible to minimize downtime.
  • We target weekends if possible
  • We try to provide seven days of notice, with three being the minimum for critical updates

As I mentioned in the Current Cumulative Updates for Office – Q3 2012 post, each quarter I will post information on the latest updates for the Office for Windows and Office for Macintosh products.

The information below is being provided regarding the most currently available updates available for the supported Windows and Macintosh versions of Office as of July 1, 2016

REMINDER: Change to the Release Schedule for Non-Security Updates

Be aware of an important change that was made to the release schedule for Office updates that began on April 5, 2016.  Non-security updates are now released in Microsoft Update and the Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) on the FIRST Tuesday of the month.  This will include all updates that have the Critical or Definition classification.  Updates with the Security classification will continue to release on the second Tuesday as usual.

This change applies only to the MSI version of Office.  Office Click-To-Run (C2R) will release on the second Tuesday.

As a reminder on why I’m providing this information and how it should be used, please see my Keeping Up with Office Updates post which discusses the cumulative updates for Office (and Outlook in particular) that companies need to be aware of and push out to their users.

Office for Windows

Office 2016

Office 2013

Office 2010

Office 2007

Office 2003

  • Office 2003 reached End-of-Life Support on April 8, 2014

Note: Each of the KB articles includes the list/links for all the Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc).  Most of you focus on Outlook and that’s the only ones required and is also provided separately but I wanted to provide the larger “Office” list in case you want it.

As a reminder, Microsoft Update does *NOT* make the cumulative updates available to users (unlike the Public Updates) for products prior to Office 2013.  These have to be downloaded and either installed independently or deployed using tools such as WSUS, SCCM, etc.

Note: As of January 1, 2015 the Office product group has made a decision to no longer have both what were known as “Public Updates” (those that you could get through Microsoft Update) and “Cumulative Updates” (separate downloads) for the Office 2013 products, which has always been very confusing (and part of why I started posting this information).  Going forward, all updates will be part of the Public Update releases.  However, I will continue to post this bulletin quarterly so that you have this information to properly manage updates for desktops, etc.

Office for Macintosh

Office 2016

Office 2011

  • Current Service Pack Level: Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 SP6 (released Jan 12, 2016)
    • Office for Mac 2011 mainstream support has been extended and will now end on October 10, 2017 instead of January 12, 2016
  • Latest cumulative Update: June 2016 – 14.6.5 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3165796)

Office 2008

  • Current Service Pack Level: Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac SP2 (released October 2009)
    • Office 2008 for Mac support ended on April 9, 2013
  • Last cumulative Update: March 2013 – 12.3.6 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817449)

Note: Each of the KB articles includes the link for downloading the package which updates ALL Office Products…there are not separate updates for each of the various components of Office as there is with the Windows releases.

Joining Insider Preview

By Michael Sammels

For everyone who has been following Microsoft blogs and Twitter feeds, you will have seen a lot about new builds. At the time of this article, the following builds are available on the following platforms:

  PC Build Mobile Build
Release Preview 10586.338 10586.338
Insider Fast 14367 14367
Insider Slow 14366 14342.1004

Now, bear in mind that Release Preview is NOT the same as Production, which is the normal build of Windows 10 – currently on 10586.420.

Okay, so you’ve decided that you want to join the Windows 10 Insider Preview on either your mobile or desktop device. I will go through the stages for joining on both devices, but thanks to similar user interfaces most of the steps will be the same.

Please be aware that when you first enable the Insider Preview ring, be it the Fast or the Slow ring, that it could take up to 24 hours for the change to be reflected and for you to get the update. Once enrolled though you can change rings immediately. It’s different on Windows Mobile devices though – for some reason, this change is instant.

Screenshots provided by Stephen White.

The Various Rings

First things first. Let’s discuss the three rings that you can get on the Insider Preview build and what’s different about each of them.

Fast ring

The Fast ring is perfect if you have a second device or PC lying around – or don’t mind taking some big risks. Because this ring gets updates the fastest and first, it has the most amount of new and changed features – but it also contains the most amount of bugs and there’s no guarantee that everything will work as expected. You may run into more problems than it is actually worth.

Updates for this ring normally arrive every two weeks or so, although in the past this has been more frequently, or less frequently. It all depends on how the guys in Redmond are doing with a fix. Patches normally come out on “Patch Tuesday”. Remember that, as with all operating system updates, your mobile device or computer will be unusable until it is completed, so this could affect things if you are in the middle of important work.

Slow ring

The Slow ring, like above can also be a risk – but not as big of a risk as the Fast ring. It only receives updates every six weeks or so and most of the features have been tested by people in the Fast ring – and subsequently any issues have been fixed. This is perfect if you’re looking for a middle ground.

Release Preview

This is an interesting ring. This contains cumulative updates to Production, but faster than normal. This ring is perfect if you want to stay on the current, and most stable ring, but occasionally test new features.

This article will discuss how to connect to either the Fast or the Slow ring, but it will not discuss connecting to the Release Preview ring.

Production

This is the final ring – which you will only see if you are already enrolled in the Insider Preview programme. This is not a test ring. Instead, it is the publicly available version of Windows 10 that everyone else is on – and you can select this to stop getting Insider updates. However, please be aware that this will not revert your phone or device back to the current version of Windows 10 that is not in preview – you will still need to flash your phone or reset your device.

This ring is only handy in the circumstance that you want to stop receiving updates and/or miss a build out.

Connecting: PC Insider Ring

If you navigate to the following

Settings -> Update & security -> Windows Insider Program

You can choose what ring you want to be on. Of course, it should be noted that you will need to be signed into the computer with a Microsoft account and that you should also be signed up to the Insider Preview program which you can do by following this link and signing in. It’s free to join.

Once everything has been setup properly you will be faced with a screen that looks somewhat like this – the design and layout may vary dependant on build:

1

As you can see from this screen, we have the option to select the Fast or Slow insider level. You will notice that while Production is mentioned above, it’s no longer available per se as an option. It’s now a button called Stop Insider Preview builds – this was a change in the later Insider Preview builds. At the time of this article, I am unsure if it has been pushed to Production or Release Preview as of yet.

So, when you first join the programme Microsoft will automatically put you on the Slow ring to begin with – as mentioned above, it is the most stable out of the two rings. If you wish to change from Slow to Fast, you are welcome to do so, but the change can take anywhere up to 24 hours to reflect and for the update to be available to yourself.

If you choose to go back to the Slow ring, or indeed stop the builds altogether, you can do so – but if you wish to revert to an earlier version you will need to reset your device or phone.

Once you have joined the programme and waited up to 24 hours, head to:

Settings -> Update & security -> Windows Update

And check for new updates. The latest build for Slow or Fast (dependant on your ring) should come through.

Connecting: Mobile Insider Ring

If you navigate to the following:

All Settings -> Update & security -> Windows Insider Programme

You can choose what ring you want to be on. Of course, it should be noted that you will need to be singed into the mobile device with a Microsoft account, and that you should also be signed up to the Insider Preview program (see above).

Once everything has been setup properly, you will be faced with a screen that looks somewhat like this – the design and layout may vary dependant on build.

2

You have the choice of Fast and Slow. Microsoft will automagically put you on the Slow ring, and if you wish to update to the Fast ring, then you have to select this manually. This will take anywhere between 12 and 24 hours to flag up before you will be able to download the latest Fast ring build on the phone.

Once a build pops up on mobile, the procedure is quite simple. You will need to keep checking your phone for updates, via the normal route:

All Settings -> Update & security -> Phone update

When a build pops through (with the latest Slow and the latest Fast), then your phone will update as it would normally should you not be on the Fast ring.

Again, it may be an idea to take note that there is no direct option to join the production ring – it is simply a button: Stop Insider Preview builds.

Once you have joined the preview and selected your ring you’ll have to wait the appropriate amount of time – which can be faster than the desktop device.

And that is how you join the preview! Rather simple in the end once you know where to look.

Announcing Enterprise Advantage on MPSA: A better way to buy organization-wide

$
0
0

By Richard Smith

General Manager, Microsoft Worldwide Licensing & Pricing (WWLP)

Today, we’re announcing a new way to buy, marking yet another step in our licensing transformation to make it easier for customers and partners to do business with Microsoft:

Enterprise Advantage on MPSA

In 2017, we will introduce Enterprise Advantage as a new way for commercial customers to buy organization-wide on the Microsoft Products and Services Agreement (MPSA). Enterprise Advantage brings traditional Enterprise Agreement benefits to the MPSA and provides the best value for a three-year, organization-wide and optional platform-wide purchase:

  • Mix perpetual and subscription software with cloud services like Office 365, Azure, and CRM Online, organization-wide
  • Purchase any time, whatever you need, with no additional enrollments
  • Enjoy budget predictability and price protection
  • Buy how you want, taking advantage of your combined purchases across the organization to maximize value
  • More easily manage your assets, including true-up and true-down of subscriptions and services, to meet ever-changing business needs

Enterprise Advantage on MPSA will offer the same business bargain, including products, pricing, and coverage, as the Enterprise Agreement, plus the added flexibility of the MPSA to align to your purchasing structure and needs. At launch, Enterprise Advantage on MPSA will be available for all commercial customers in markets where the MPSA is available, but will be the optimal choice for most customers with up to 2,400 users or devices. We anticipate introducing similar offerings called Government Advantage and Education Advantage later in 2017, and will continue to build additional functionality over time to support all of our customers with modern licensing choices.

In addition to this new way to buy coming in 2017, remember two policy changes we previously announced become effective today to help customers and partners more easily find and choose the licensing option that best suits their needs:

  • Retirement of Select Plus. Existing commercial Select Plus customers will no longer be able to place orders through their Select Plus agreement beginning at their next anniversary date.* Instead, the MPSA offers a more modern licensing option that enables customers to buy licenses for online services, software, and Software Assurance through a simpler and more flexible agreement.
  • Increase in the minimum Enterprise Agreement (EA) commitment. For commercial customers signing new Enterprise Enrollments or Enterprise Subscription Enrollments, the minimum commitment increases today to 500 from 250 users or devices*. For new commercial customers with 250 to 499 users or devices, we recommend the MPSA, or the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program for those looking for partner-managed services. MPSA and CSP are the fastest and most flexible ways to buy from Microsoft.

Microsoft customers and partners have contributed to the development of Enterprise Advantage coming in 2017. Together with the policy changes taking effect today, this brings us closer to our goal of providing simpler, more flexible modern licensing. Revisit this blog for more news and information about the transformation of Microsoft volume licensing.

*Both Select Plus retirement and the increase in the minimum Enterprise Agreement commitment policy changes effective today apply only to commercial customers in markets where the MPSA is available. Select Plus will continue to be offered in People’s Republic of China, India, and other markets where the MPSA is not yet available, and the contractual minimum for the Enterprise Agreement will not be raised in those areas.
