Linda Liukas is a programmer. She is also a storyteller and an illustrator. Not the most typical of combinations, but Linda makes it seem natural.

Her book Hello Ruby is a whimsical tale of a child exploring the world of computing. A precocious little girl with a big imagination, Ruby stomps around her world making new friends such as a beautiful Snow Leopard, friendly green Robots, and the eccentric yet smart Penguin.

The children’s book has been a hit with kids, parents and educators worldwide, having been translated into 10 languages, including Japanese and Korean. This Hour of Code, we speak to the programmer-storyteller who’s inspiring young children to learn more about coding.

Ruby: The little girl with a big imagination

Linda, you started programming when you were 13, and even created a site for former US Vice President Al Gore. But you stopped for a while. How did you rekindle your passion for it?

I was studying business at Stanford University and came upon this product design course. The experience made me fall in love with programming all over again. It made me realize that my interests and personality traits allow me to enjoy programming. For example, when I was a little girl, I always enjoyed telling stories and creating my own little universes. In programming, you do exactly the same. You decide on the rules, names, vocabulary and everything that unfolds in the world you imagine with code.

That’s a unique perspective on programming, the way you relate it to storytelling…

It came with learning that there’s not only one way to be a programmer. I had this weird idea that the true programmer is the one who writes the hard-core back-end algorithms but in reality, there are so many different career choices in this industry.

Personally, I wanted to explore how to bring together storytelling and coding. Maybe I won’t be the next Steve Wozniak, but I can always be myself—and bring my own voice into this realm.

Have you ever experienced difficulties in coding?

Absolutely! Even today, I sometimes feel like an “impostor” calling myself a programmer because I don’t know everything there is to know. And most programmers share the same feeling. This is a field that is always evolving, and no one can master everything about programming. I’ve encountered little girls running up to me to say, “Oh I’m an awful programmer, I made a mistake!” I make it a point to remind them that making mistakes is the only way to learn new things.

Linda believes that embracing uncertainty is part and parcel of learning to be a programmer

In your view, why should everyone learn programming? And why is it important to start young?

In today’s world, we need more people to embrace technology as a tool to solve problems around us and use it as a tool for creation. A lot of the coding discourse today is centered around GDP growth. For me, it’s exciting to see both artists and researchers embrace programming as a medium for creative expression.

Many believe we need to start young to become a successful programmer, but I always tell adults that they can easily learn programming too, especially with all the information available today. However, from my own anecdotal experience, we start to define ourselves around the age of 10-12. It’s an important stage of growing up and we need to teach young children to see that while computers are binary, technology is not. Technology and coding are just tools, and not what defines their identities.

Let’s talk more about Hello Ruby. Other than the book, you’ve also developed downloadable exercises on your website and now, an application?

We’re all very surprised at the excitement around Ruby. We never anticipated that teachers would be the most ardent Ruby fans. We’ve created some classroom materials that explain the foundations of code in a fun and playful manner, and we’re developing apps now. The first is coming out in a few weeks’ time. We’re using it to teach the concepts of computational thinking through open-ended play.

We’ve recently launched our first activity on Code.org. It’s an unplugged activity where kids build their own computer. Instead of using electronics or hardware, they’re building it out of paper! They piece together the GPU, CPU, and different types of memory—the RAM, the ROM, and the hard drive—and once they’re done, they create their very own application for the computer.

Through this activity, we want to instill the pride and sheer excitement that people had in the early days when computers were not so foreign, and you could actually touch a transistor and physically put a computer together. I believe when it comes to teaching kids to code, it’s more about instilling in them a sense of curiosity, encouraging them to be adventurous and have a fearless relationship with technology.

• Full Hybrid: 一般的に、規模が大きくて移行に時間のかかるお客様、あるいは、短期間にすべてのメールボックスを Exchange Online に移行するのが困難というお客様に適しています。最も複雑な構成となりますが、クロスプレミスでの空き時間情報の確認や高度なメール フロー オプションなど、高度な機能が利用できます。Full Hybrid の詳細については、こちらのページを参照してください。
• Minimal Hybrid: 6 月にハイブリッド構成ウィザードに追加された、比較的新しいオプションです。この方法で環境を構成すると、ハイブリッドへの移行と受信者管理が可能になると共に、空き時間情報の確認といった、Full Hybrid で必要とされた高度な機能を構成する手間が省けます。すべてのメールボックスを数か月以内に Exchange Online に移行したいが、ディレクトリ同期は有効にしておきたいと考えるお客様が一般的に採用する構成です。Minimal Hybrid の詳細については、こちらのページ (英語) を参照してください。
• Express Migration: 今回追加された最新のオプションが、Express Migration です。ハイブリッド構成ウィザードから選択でき、小規模企業のお客様、または数週間以内に Exchange Online に移行したいと強くご希望のお客様に適しています。ディレクトリ同期を有効にしておく必要があるお客様には適していません。このオプションでは、ユーザーの構成が可能です。また、新たな移行方式によって、ユーザーへのサービス中断を最小限に抑えながらメールボックスを Exchange Online に移行することができます。

Express Migration の詳細について

中堅中小企業の管理者の皆様は、これまで、複雑な構成手順を伴うハイブリッド移行か、複雑なユーザー エクスペリエンスを伴う一括移行か段階的移行のいずれかを選ぶしかありませんでした。しかし、これからは、きわめて簡単に実施できる Express Migration を選べるようになります。

Express Migration オプションでは、Minimal Hybrid 構成でディレクトリ同期を 1 度だけ行うことで移行を実施できます。このユーザー アカウントの初期同期を実行した後は、Office 365 とオンプレミスの双方でディレクトリ同期が自動で無効になります。これにより、これまで一括移行を採用してきた中堅中小企業のお客様は、手間を省いてハイブリッド移行のメリットを得られるようになります。

Express Migration を実施した場合、従来の一括移行に比べて、以下のようなメリットがあります。

• ユーザー名とパスワードがオンプレミスと同期される
• ユーザーは Outlook プロファイルを作り直す必要がない
• 移行の前後および最中も、ユーザー間でのメール フローが維持される
• 基本的に、移行の最中、ユーザーへのサービスが中断されることがない

移行の開始

この記事で取り上げたいずれの移行方法 (Full Hybrid、Minimal Hybrid、Express Migration) も、同じインターフェイスから開始することができます。手順に従って進めると、適切なオプションが提示されるようになっています。

今回の新たな方式で重要な役割を果たすコンポーネントが、移行ウィンドウです。Office 365 管理ポータルに新しく導入されたウィンドウであり、ポータル全体による最新型の外観を踏襲した作りになっています。新しいのは外観だけではなく、数多くのインテリジェンスが組み込まれています。たとえば、移行ウィンドウを開くと、ハイブリッド構成ウィザードを実行済みかどうか、ユーザーの同期を実行済みかどうか、移行エンドポイントを作成済みかどうかが検出されるようになっています。何が構成済みかに応じて適切な移行手順が提示されます。

この新しい移行方式を利用するには、ポータル (http://portal.office.com) の [Users] セクションを開いて、[Data Migration] オプションを選択します。次に、作業を実施する電子メール ソースとして [Exchange] を選択します。このページには、移行元となる各種ソースが表示されます。ここでは、[Exchange] オプションを選択します。

ソースの選択後、テナントのチェックがすばやく行われ、ハイブリッド構成ウィザードを実行済みかどうかが確認されます。実行済みでない場合、オンプレミス環境で移行準備がまだなされていないと判断され、ハイブリッド構成ウィザードのダウンロードと実行が促されます。

ハイブリッド構成ウィザードを開始すると、ようこそ画面が表示されるので、[next] を選択します。

次に、サーバー検出画面が表示されます。正しいサーバーが検出されているはずなので、ここでも [next] を選択します。既定では、最新バージョンを実行している Exchange サーバーに接続を試みます。

オンプレミスの Exchange と Exchange Online の双方で使用する資格情報を提供します。

適切な移行オプションを選択します。ここでは、Express Migration の例をご紹介しているので、[Minimal Hybrid Configuration] を選択します。

[update] を選択すると、必要な構成作業すべてが実行されて、以降の手順でメールボックスの移行が開始できるようになります。

次の手順: ユーザーのプロビジョニング

この時点で、ユーザーの同期がまだ行われていない場合は、ユーザーの同期を 1 度だけ実行するか、または AAD Connect を個別にインストールするかのオプションが表示されます。前述したように、すべてのメールボックスを Exchange Online に移行することを計画しており、かつ、ディレクトリ同期を有効にしておく必要がない場合は、1 度だけ同期を行うオプションを選択します。これにより、”Express Migration” の対象であると見なされます。何らかの理由でディレクトリ同期が必要な場合は、AAD Connect を個別にインストールしてセットアップする必要があります。

ウィザードで [Minimal Hybrid Configuration] を選択しなかった場合、ディレクトリ同期を 1 度だけ行うオプションは表示されません。[Full Hybrid Configuration] を選択した場合にこれが表示されないのは、高度な共存機能とディレクトリ同期を必要とする展開シナリオであるためです。

[Synchronize my users and passwords one time] オプションを選択すると、ハイブリッド構成ウィザードに進行状況バーが表示され、AAD Connect が構成されてユーザーが同期されるまで待機します。

ハイブリッド構成ウィザードのセットアップを完了するには、AAD Connect を構成する必要があります。ほとんどの場合、AAD Connect の既定の設定を選択するのが最適なオプションです。

これが完了すると、ハイブリッド アプリケーションの終了ページが表示されて、フィードバックが入力できます。このページを閉じると、ユーザー リストのページが表示されて、そこからメールボックスの移行を開始できます。

ユーザー リストのページでは、移行したいユーザーを選択できます。ここで、実際にはハイブリッド移行と同様に MRS を使用してユーザーの移行が行われます。この新しいウィンドウでは、ハイブリッド展開オプションを選択したかどうかにかかわらず、メールボックスを移行できます。ユーザーを選択して [start migration] をクリックするだけなので、操作は簡単です。このとき、前提条件が満たされているかどうかの確認が行われます。満たされていない条件があれば、実施すべき手順が適宜、表示されます。

制限事項

新しい移行ウィンドウには、注意すべき制限事項がいくつかあります。今後、こうした制限事項をなくしていけるように、取り組みを進めています。

• サポートされる移行エンドポイントは 1 つだけ: エンドポイントが複数ある場合、ハイブリッド構成ウィザードで作成されたエンドポイントまたは新しい移行方式で作成されたエンドポイントが選択されます。
• 一度に 1 つのバッチしか開始できない: 今回の移行ウィンドウでは、複数のバッチはまだサポートされていません。そのため、前の移行の完了を待ってから、次の移行を開始する必要があります。マイクロソフトは、中規模および大規模企業のお客様にとって、複数バッチのサポートが重要であることは認識しており、これを最優先課題と考えています。
• 個々のユーザーにライセンスを付与する必要がある: 今回の方式で移行する全ユーザーに対して、移行開始前にライセンスを付与する必要があります (共有メールボックスのオブジェクト タイプを除く)。この作業は自動では行われないため、移行前にユーザーにライセンスを付与しなければなりません。

本日マイクロソフトは、汎用的なコンピューティング性能の VM サイズとして新たに「A_v2」をリリースしました。この新バージョンの A シリーズ VM では、vCPU あたりの RAM の容量が増え、1 コアでは 1.75 GiB から 2 GiB に、4 コアでは 7 GiB から 8 GiB に増強されています。また、ローカル ディスクのランダム IOPS は、既存のバージョンの A シリーズと比べて 2 ～ 10 倍高速化されています。

この新しいサイズでは、VM ファミリ名の後に VM の vCPU の数を付記するという新たな VM 命名規則を採用しています。vCPU 数の後に続く「m」は、大容量メモリの搭載 (vCPU あたり 8 GiB) を表しています (例: Standard_A8m_v2)。

新しい VM 命名規則が採用されたことで注意していただきたいのは、既存の Standard_A8 の後継サイズは Standard_H8 であり、A8_v2 ではないということです。新しい A8_v2 サイズは、既存の A4 および A7 の後継サイズとなります。わかりやすいように、既存のバージョンと v2 の対応を表にまとめました。

RunConfig.bat requires special permissions on Windows and needs to be run as SYSTEM in some cases. The script may work successfully as an Administrator on some systems, but require SYSTEM on others.

If you are using Configuration Manager to run the script, you should be right as Configuration Manager runs as SYSTEM. If you are testing then you can use tools such as PSEXEC to start an interactive command line session as system.

The Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 5-11, is an annual initiative that mobilizes educators, parents, nonprofits and the industry to inspire all young people to learn computer science and open the door to a promising future. With our rising digital economy and the nonstop pace of technological change, we have an imperative to prepare young people to pursue careers that are in demand.

Computer science refers to the academic discipline of studying what can be done using a computer and how to do so. At the foundation of this is computational thinking, a mental process that allows one to formulate problems so as to design possible solutions that a computer or human can easily understand.

Coding is one way that computational thinking can be expressed. It is simply writing a list of step-by-step instructions for computers to perform what we want to do. More importantly, it provides everyone a platform to unleash our creativity to create software websites, games, and apps.

More than half of today’s jobs require some technology skills, and this will increase to 77 percent in the next decade, according to IDC. With youth unemployment in Southeast Asia alone almost three times that of total unemployment rate, coding and computer science serve as the gateway for youth to secure a more fulfilling career or even venture into entrepreneurship. In the Philippines for instance, an entry-level tech position pays 38 percent more than the minimum wage.

I strongly encourage everyone to try coding—and here’s why:

1. Digital capabilities and economic growth go together

According to a recent study by Accenture, more than a fifth (22%) of global GDP today can be attributed to some form of digital skills, capital, goods or services. Digital tech could power $2 trillion of the global economic output by 2020, clearly demonstrating its role in igniting overall economic growth. For this reason, there are plans to formally introduce computing and computer science education into national curricula in several Asian countries like Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.

2. Coding is a skill that is increasingly being demanded by the labor market

Technological advancements like artificial intelligence have ignited much debate, partially due to their potential to replace humans at their jobs. According to World Economic Forum research, over five million jobs will be lost by 2020 as a result of technological change. Less reported, however, is that technology can generate jobs and ignite overall economic growth by creating a spillover effect in other industries. For example, in New Zealand, each new job in the high-tech industry creates five additional jobs in other sectors.

The jobs of the future will come with new demands—coding along with STEM education are part of the reskilling and upskilling required to stay relevant.

3. Coding also drives innovation and entrepreneurship

Though it feels like there’s an app for everything these days, the world is always waiting for The Next Big Thing. The app economy is expected to double in size to $101 billion by 2020, so if you have a great idea, knowing how to code will help a great deal in getting your product to market. Who knows, your brainchild may redefine traditional industries, like what Uber and Airbnb have done to transportation and tourism, respectively!

Based on latest data from Bloomberg, the world’s top five companies by stock market cap are Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook—a reflection of how the growth baton has been passed to technology from traditional industries such as oil and gas, banks and automotive.

4. Coding is the new second language

Just like how picking up a new language opens doors to foreign cultures, learning to code can unlock possibilities to create new things. For instance, at least four states in the US are looking to count coding to fulfil a foreign-language requirement in high school. This reflects the thinking that in today’s competitive job market, computer skills are just as critical as speaking another language.

There are thousands of programming languages, some more popular than others. While some of the better-known programming languages are written in the Latin alphabet, there are others where you code in the national languages of Asian countries, such as Indonesian (BAIK), Korean (Changjo), Japanese (Dolittle), Mandarin (PerlYuYan), and even Hindi—there are over 20 Asian programming languages!

5. Coding complements and reinforces other important fundamental skills, such as problem-solving and teamwork

Coding benefits more than those who want to pursue it professionally. In the learning process, you can build some important fundamentals, such as how to simplify complex systems. It is an extension to critical and creative thinking, contributes to problem-solving capabilities, develops logic, and accelerates the power and potential of individuals to innovate and tap into the digital economy of the future.

If you want to learn more about this, you can now also watch Code Trip, a documentary created by Microsoft in partnership with Roadtrip Nation, that follows three computer science students as they meet with coders, researchers, and robotics engineers, finding inspiration and guidance from people who have defied stereotypes to build meaningful careers in tech.  As the road trippers discover the wide range of careers in computer science—and the diverse people working in them—they realize that they don’t have to fit a mould to make it in tech; anyone has the potential to be a driver of innovation and discovery.

So if you are totally inspired to start learning how to code, here are five (free) resources to kick-start your journey.

1. Minecraft Hour of Code Tutorial introduces players to basic coding within the fun and popular “Minecraft” environment. Use “blocks” of code to take your character on an adventure through this Minecraft world.

2. Touch Develop is an interactive development environment and a visual programming language used to develop application programs for mobile devices, including smartphones and tablet computers.

3. Kodu Game Lab allows users to create games on the PC and Xbox via a simple visual programming language. Kodu can be used to teach creativity, problem solving, storytelling, as well as programming. Anyone can use Kodu to make a game—young children as well as adults with no design or programming skills.

4. CS Unplugged is a collection of free learning activities that teach Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, string, crayons and lots of running around. CS Unplugged is suitable for people of all ages, from primary school to seniors, and from many countries and backgrounds. Unplugged has been used around the world for over 20 years, in classrooms, science centers, homes, and even for holiday events in a park!

5. Small Basic is a project that is focused at making programming accessible and easy for beginners. With a friendly development environment that is very easy to master, it eases both kids and adults into the world of programming.

Now, you can build your own virtual universe at this year’s Computer Science Education Week, held from December 5 to 11. It’ll just take an hour of your time!

The Computer Science Education Week is an annual campaign spearheaded by nonprofit Code.org, and supported by a multitude of personalities and tech companies—from Bill Gates to Amazon. During this week, hour-long events known as the Hour of Code are held worldwide to get millions of youth to try coding, raise awareness about the importance of computer science education, and increase access to it.

Last year, we teamed up with Code.org to bring Minecraft to the Hour of Code. Students were thrilled to traverse the blocky and colorful world many are familiar with while learning the basics of coding. Code.org has also added more Hour of Code tutorials—with popular characters such as BB-8, Elsa, and Moana making an appearance—to appeal to more students (and even adults!).

What can you expect at 2016 Hour of Code?

Firstly, we have a new Minecraft tutorial called the Minecraft Hour of Code Designer. This installment is all about creating your own world to explore, and defining character interactions with objects.

For instance, players can code the behavior of their Minecraft mobs—whether to have zombies attack creepers or sheep produce diamonds—and be introduced to computer science concepts such as entities, events, loops, randomness, and sequencing. With higher levels of complexity and more free play, the Designer edition promises to push creativity to the limit and add more excitement to the Hour of Code experience.

We also have a slew of events happening throughout the entire Computer Science Education Week in Asia.

To date, more than 120 schools and organizations have registered for the Hour of Code. We are working closely with educators and government officials to extend our reach to more youth and increase the impact of our work in promoting computer science education. To further enhance the upcoming Hour of Code sessions, we are also providing presenters and facilitators with the training, information, and tools they need to effectively lead the events.

Here are some notable events happening across Asia:

India – Hour of Code at Tamana, Dec 8

Microsoft Philanthropies will be organizing an Hour of Code session at Tamana, a nonprofit that provides education for students with autism and other special education needs. It aims to give students with learning disabilities a chance to experience and learn basic coding principles in a comfortable environment.

Japan – Programming for All, Dec 11

Teachers, nonprofits, and government officials will gather to try their hand at the Hour of Code and the Minecraft Education Edition. They will also learn about best practices and case studies on how to successfully bring computer science education into classrooms. At the same time, Microsoft employees will be spread across 17 community centers, orphanages, and schools throughout the week, where they will conduct Hour of Code sessions for more than 900 children.

Singapore – We Tech Care, Dec 10

The one-day event, to be held at the Enabling Village, will provide a platform for people of all ages to learn coding. It will also help connect today’s innovators with tomorrow’s and raise awareness of technologies that help alleviate social issues, support digital inclusion programs and foster skill-based learning efforts.

Vietnam – Hour of Code at Microsoft Innovative School, Dec 8

This will be held at the Olympia School, Microsoft’s very first Microsoft Mentor school. More than 100 students will code together and at the same time, be connected with 100 other students from Vietnam-Australia International School to share the excitement of coding.

These events are just the tip of the iceberg for 2016 Hour of Code. Check in with your local community leader or neighborhood school to see if they are organizing their own Hour of Code sessions. You can even organize one of your own—it’s quick and easy! Otherwise, participate in the Hour of Code from the comfort of your own home.
