Project and Project Server June 2018 Updates Released

$
0
0

This week the Public Update (PU) for Project Server 2013 and 2016 were released for June 2018 . Client updates were released on June 5th; server updates on June 12th. Typically the client updates release on the first Tuesday of the month and server on the second Tuesday release schedule.

There was a Project Server 2010 Cumulative update package released this month but it did not contain any Project updates - just the SharePoint ones. Mainstream support for Project and Project Server 2010 ended October 13, 2015 - see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle. An SP1 patched 2010 system (with no SP2) is no longer supported - see the Lifecycle site for more information - http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search?sort=PN&alpha=project+2010&Filter=FilterNO

We are now delivering as Public Updates, although Server fixes are shipped just via the Download Center and not via Microsoft Update (Unless there is a security element or a fix deemed essential - this month both SharePoint Server 2016 and 2013 fixes have security fixes - so some may have come down via the update center). These are still all cumulative and include fixes released in all previous updates since the last baseline (Initial release for 2016 and SP1 for 2013).

A note about Click-to-Run (sometimes abbreviated C2R) versions of Project for Office 365. The updates for this version are not included in this blog. For some information about Click-to-Run versions, please see the following site for version numbers and some fix information: https://technet.microsoft.com/office/mt465751. We may have a future blog with additional information about Click-to-Run update channels and methods.

Also a note for users of the Project client connecting to Project Online - see https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/projectsupport/2016/12/15/using-project-online-time-to-be-sure-you-upgrade-the-client-software/-  you will have needed a '2016' level client to connect starting since the end of June 2017.

Feel free to open a support case if you have any questions around this or need assistance getting these patches deployed.

We should be back to 'normal' install times now (I patched both my 2013 and 2016 systems in a couple of hours) - but leaving this comment here just in case... One point to note is the installation of the Project Server 2016 package (SharePoint Server) for September 2016 and beyond can take longer to install than previous 2016 updates, on my slow server it took several hours, so you should ensure you test installation in a similar environment to production to ensure you allow enough downtime.

The 2013 PU releases also have a real prerequisite of the appropriate Service Pack 1 (SP1), and links for SP1 are given below. SP1 is enforced in this release, so you will find out (as I did) if you really do have SP1 for all your installed components and language packs! This also means RTM is no longer supported! See http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2015/04/15/common-issue-april-2015-fixes-for-sharepoint-2013-cannot-be-installed-on-sharepoint-2013-sp1-slipstream-builds.aspx too which describes an issue you might see if you don't have the 'right' SP1. Slipstream would work with the original SP1 - but the updates require the re-released SP1. Since the May PU this shouldn't be an issue - but including here just in case.

Another important point to add here is that there was in early 2013 running the SharePoint Configuration Wizard on a server with Project Server 2013 installed -this is fixed by applying the April 2013 or later- so a good practice would be to load SP1, then the current PU and then run the configuration wizard (if you didn't already load the April 2013 through June 2014 CU).

Project and Project Server 2016

An overview of all the Office 2016 releases for June 2018 can be found here -

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4299875/june-2018-updates-for-microsoft-office - June 2018 updates for Microsoft Office

Project Server 2016

With the 2016 release, we just have a single patch (usually this single patch comes in two parts... a wssloc and sts2016 part - however this month we only have the sts2016 part) - as we have also the single msi for installation of SharePoint Server 2016 (Project Server still needs licensing separately though). Both parts need installing before the configuration wizard is executed. The sts2016 part of the patch also contains security fixes so is released via Microsoft Update, the Update catalog as well as the download center.

Description of the security update for SharePoint Server 2016: June 12, 2018- Includes Project fixes, like the roll-up patch in Project Server 2013.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4022173/description-of-the-security-update-for-sharepoint-enterprise-server-20

June 12, 2018, update for SharePoint Server 2016 (KB4022178)- Can include Project fixes, like the roll-up patch in Project Server 2013

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4022178/june-12-2018-update-for-sharepoint-enterprise-server-2016-kb4022178

There is a database schema update this month - it changes to 16.0.4705.1000. Remember, Project Server 2016 data is in the content database. The version number 16.0.4705.1000 can be used to control the connecting client to the June 2018 level. For reference - the RTM build number seen for the DB schema would be 16.0.4327.1000.

Project 2016 Client Package:

June 5th, 2018, update for Project 2016 (KB4022164)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4022164/june-5-2018-update-for-project-2016-kb4022164

The version of Project Professional 2016 will be updated to 16.0.4705.1000 in the properties for WinProj.exe. In 2016 we don't do a good job of displaying the version in File, Account, About Project - we only display the MSO version and not the specific Project version (You can confirm this by looking at the version of winproj.exe - in (default for 32 bit) C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice16)

If you have Click to Run and using Project Pro for Office 365 at the '16' level, then your version will depend on which update frequency you have set. Take a look at https://blogs.office.com/2016/02/09/deferred-channel-build-now-available-for-the-office-365-client-apps/ for a few changes in this area - Current Branch for Business is now called Deferred Channel. We are aware that we don't appear to expose the full change details for Project and are looking into it - you should start seeing more here soon.

Project and Project Server 2013

An overview of all the Office 2013 releases for June 2018 can be found here - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4299875/june-2018-updates-for-microsoft-office - June 2018, updates for Microsoft Office. This include multiple fixes, so Microsoft strongly recommends that you test this in a test environment based on your production environment before putting this fix live in production. You can read about the fixes included in the Project and Project Server June PUs from the following articles:

Project Server 2013 Server Rollup Package

June 12, 2018, cumulative update for Project Server 2013 (KB4022185)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4022185/june-12-2018-cumulative-update-for-project-server-2013-kb4022185

Project Server 2013 Individual Project Package - (cumulative, but only the Project Server fixes):

Description of the security update for Project Server 2013: June 12, 2018 (KB4022192)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4022192/june-12-2018-update-for-project-server-2013-kb4022192

There is no database schema update this month - and the dbo.Versions table should show 15.0.5011.1000 after applying the June 2018 PU. The version number 15.0.5011.1000 can be used to control the connecting client to the June 2018 PU level. Project Professional Versions (Project Server 2013 settings)

SP1 for Project Server 2013 can be found here - https://support.microsoft.com/help/2880553

Project 2013 Client Package:

June 5, 2018, update for Project 2013 (KB4022171)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4022171/june-5-2018-update-for-project-2013-kb4022171

The client version number will be 15.0.5037.1000. The server scheduling engine is no longer blocked by version control since the November 2014 CU on the server, so providing you have November 2014 CU or above on the server you can use the 15.0.5037.1000 value to control connection of the June 2018 PU patched client.

If you are running a server CU earlier than November 2014 CU, then follow the suggested version number for the server patch level you are running. See https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/projectsupport/2013/09/16/project-server-2013-controlling-the-version-of-connecting-clientsand-pwa-edits/ for more details. As mentioned above - the version number entered no longer controls the server side scheduling engine - so from the November 2014 CU release onward you can set a higher version to control clients without blocking the server side scheduling in the schedule web part.

SP1 for Project Professional 2013 can be found here - https://support.microsoft.com/help/2817433

Client Installation:

The instructions for installing the client patch are below.

NOTE: Microsoft strongly recommends testing within a NON-Production environment prior to rollout.

  1. Download the hotfix from the link in the KB Article.
  2. Extract the patch package by running the .exe file that you downloaded.
  3. Run the extracted .exe file to apply the patch to your Project Professional/Standard client.

Or, from February 2015 onwards use Windows Update to download and install the patches.

Azure Blob Storage のライフサイクル管理機能のパブリック プレビュー

執筆者: Yuan Zheng (Principal Program Manager)

Hello All,

Going thru all my sticky notes I saw this was a topic of interest to you so I thought I would do some quick digging and provide you a high level look.

If you are interested in further information let me know and we can work out the details for a 1 or 2 hour discussion.

Installation of Teams:

Microsoft has provided MSI files (32-bit or 64-bit)to help you in your deployment of the Teams application thru tools like GPO or SCCM.  Things to consider:

  1. It’s recommended that you install to the default location, otherwise updating the application will be complicated.
  2. When installing the MSI we recommend except all defaults
  3. Application will update itself thru O365 service
  4. Target machine recommendations
    1. .NET Framework 4.5 or later
    2. Windows 7 or later
    3. 3GB of free disk pace for each profile

Control thru Portal:

By now you should be seeing the new Teams & Skype admin center (You may or may not) so I will talk only about that portal.  For more information about managing teams without the new portal, please see here.

During the migration any settings like Email integration, Cloud storage, Calls and Meetings, and messaging will be migrated to the new admin portal for you.

Here are the policies that you can apply to Teams:

  1. Microsoft Teams messaging policy: Create policy for user-level management of the Microsoft Teams client experience for Messaging scenarios.
  2. Microsoft Teams upgrade policy: Configure the interoperability and upgrade experience between Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams. See, https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/migration-interop-guidance-for-teams-with-skype.
  3. Microsoft Teams guest messaging settings: Control the messaging capabilities for guest accounts in Microsoft Teams.
  4. Federation settings: Manage the federation between tenants for Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business.
  5. User management: Assign policies and configure user accounts.
  6. Audio conferencing: Configure dial-in numbers and settings for Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams.

Control thru PowerShell:

First of all, as of 6/1/2018 the O365 Teams PowerShell module is in Beta and is not fully supported for production use.

Follow instructions on this page to download/install the module.  NOTE: At the bottom of this page it will list any updates that are released for the module

Add-TeamUser - Adds an owner or member to the team, and to the unified group which backs the team.

MP Author Version 8.2

The following is a special guest blog from Silect

We are pleased to announce the General Availability of MP Author version 8.2. We’ve made lots of updates and improvements to our family of products for SCOM. Here’s a summary of the changes to MP Author:

  • Support for SCOM 1801
  • When sealing and deploying and MP, deploy the sealed MP, not the unsealed.
  • Remember the last SCOM version used when creating an MP, as it should be the default next time. Improve display and logging of the versions of reference MP that are loaded.
  • Groups can now be created without dynamic membership rules.
  • Improved impersonation when browsing remote registries.
  • When parsing scripts for class names, parameters, etc. allow both single and double quotes.
  • When displaying lists of targets, ensure the list shows abstract and singletons if needed.
  • Several dialogs and message boxes now allow you to not show them again (once you know what they are telling you, you can select a “Don’t Show This Again” check box.)
  • Discoveries can now be enabled for a group from within the wizard.
  • Alert, Event, Performance and State views can now be filtered by a group.
  • Editing event, performance, service or process rules/monitors will work correctly even if the machine being browsed doesn’t have the items previously selected.
  • Performance monitors now support two and three-state monitors using simple values, average values, delta values, or consecutive samples.
  • Script monitors and rules allowed overrides on the parameter values but did not use the override value. This has been corrected.
  • Setting a description for an element which does not have a display name failed. The new behaviour is to set the missing display name (to the actual name) at the same time.
  • Do not require hosted classes with no key properties to be singletons because the hosting class may have key properties.
  • Improve handling of reference MPs which don’t exist or are the wrong version.
  • Allow registry and WMI queries to work if they contain characters which are significant in XML (like < or >).
  • The script class wizard will no longer allow users to change the class name, if the class name was determined from the script (if they don’t match, the discovery will fail).
  • Numerous bug fixes, UI and performance improvements

Don’t Perspire at Inspire

$

By Sarah Croxford, Enterprise Channel Manager, Microsoft UK.

I have been asked many a time by partners, "How do I make a success of Microsoft Inspire?" "It's a big investment, how do I justify it?" Having been to several WPC and Microsoft Inspire events I thought I would share some guidance for partners as to how to make the most of their time there. I have been going every other year since 2008 (Houston, New Orleans Los Angeles, Orlando). In 2008, I was 3 months into my tenure at Microsoft, sat in the UK Lounge and met Richard Gibbons - three years later he went onto write this blog and I think this is a great reminder of the fact of how important Inspire can be for many of our partners.

This year is vastly different and will be the first year that partners and Microsoft staff will come together - it's going to be huge!

Prep it

Start preparing now and prepare early

  • What do you want from Inspire? Is it the partnering relationships, engagement with Microsoft, updates and news from MS Execs, knowledge and learning? What will help you to determine the ROI you gain, and some benefits are non-measurable. The partnering piece is here where many companies have found investors, collaborators, new start-ups, innovation offerings some of this is shorter-term and some longer term
  • Who is going? There Is a connection tool available once you have registered. Try and engage the individuals now - some people will rarely take a meeting request unless they have heard of you. LinkedIn and Twitter can be helpful for that - following up on articles will help to encourage you to build some links before you go. Book appointments as early as you can as some people will get very booked out
  • Get your LinkedIn Profile up to-date - many people will make this the first point to check alongside your website. Updated events & content are key (we come onto messaging in a minute)

Prop it

It's all about your proposition. You will meet 100's of people. Each of those will meet the same. You need to make sure your company stands out for the right reason and like touch paper a well-developed proposition that is clearly articulated in 10 second will fly around with "You really must speak to x, they have some exceptional stories, really aligned - have a chat to them".

  • If you cannot articulate what you do in 10 seconds. They will forget you.
  • How to create a 10 second value prop
  • Differentiate yourself from your competition and be clear about who they are
  • Appeal to the emotion of the individual in your statement its either time, money or people
  • Know your market - if your expertise is in a vertical use that, if you're a horizontal solution offering make sure you are clear about the markets you play in
  • Articulate what you do in one sentence and make sure all the team with you know that's what you do - they are your biggest brand ambassadors ensure they are fully aligned and briefed before attending.
  • "We deliver secure IOT cloud first solutions for healthcare that provide the insights that will save lives and improve the efficiencies of ambulance workers "
  • Follow that up with... "and it drives Azure consumption within 2 months, it's an IP Co-Sell qualifier, we are co-seller ready with p-sellers and a fantastic way to penetrate into new customers you should be onto a winner"
  • As a newer partner, the start up and innovation message is important too. Microsoft people are looking to meet with new partners not always the ones they have always done business with.

Build out strong customer references

  • Have a quick ready reckoner on customers you are working with or have delivered in. Have quantifiable information that backs up your solutions.
  • Have you got a customer that can tell your story? Will they advocate for you?
  • Have you got videos/short podcasts that you can share?

Become a good story-teller

  • Make your customer reference a story. People like stories - they can visualise what and how someone went through the pain and solved their challenges and the happy outcome. Most people are positive and want the story with the warm fuzzy feeling at the end.
  • A good story will take them through the ups and downs, driving an emotive engagement with the audience. Those emotions don't need to pull at the heart strings but can hit the emotions of a buyer through addressing their challenges around saving cost, investing wisely, improving productivity or helping people to achieve.

Pace it

Pace yourself it's a giddy experience for first-timers. When you walk into the conference you get hit by the size of the audience and that everybody in the room is either Microsoft or a partner. It's a phenomenal global ecosystem so take time to savour that moment.

  • If travel and time allows, try and get there for a day prior so you can attend any local meet ups and get over your jet lag/travel and to be able to orientate yourself. You can pick up your entry badge so give yourself some time to do that.
  • Take some time to recharge - head to the UK lounge for a chill out and to relax amongst others and network there
  • They are long days - even the early starts from breakfast to later evening events and you will meet many people
  • Keep hydrated - its Vegas. It's also too easy to dose up on loads of fizzy drinks and random snacks
  • I personally am always in awe of the huge logistics that go behind the food stations - you don't need to queue too much, and you should be able to find somewhere to sit - working out how they do this and get everyone bused around is phenomenal.
  • Take comfortable shoes - and multiple pairs. You will easily do your 10,000 steps every day.
  • Take some time to explore the Expo - there are loads of good innovations, partner resources etc and more for a first time its worth trying to get some time to have a look around.

People & Networking

  • Head to the UK hosted opening event or if you miss that due to flights then go to the UK Lounge. It's the hangout for the entire UK team and many EMEA UK-based teams too.
  • The Microsoft UK team are normally in their Union Jack jackets so easy to spot. If you get stuck, don't feel afraid to ask.
  • At lunch you can meet a host of people from all round the world as they head to their lunch areas, you could be sat by an Azure Sales Lead for a country or a new business partner. Feel free to introduce yourself and remember your 10 Sec pitch and join them.
  • Get onto twitter and follow the UK Microsoft Partner Network Tweets.

Prioritise your follow up

  • Leverage and share your experiences of what you learned and your experiences on a blog. Not a great writer? Video it. Face for radio? Podcast/Skype recording. Person of few words? Tweet. Either way share your experiences and it's a terrific way to remind Microsoft and partners
  • Who did you meet? It's wise to follow up on email at the event and then set a reminder a least five days later to follow up again. Ensure they have your value prop summary, customers references and video props and agreed actions and contacts.
  • Share the content internally. Much of the content will be available or live streamed so you can share the core key notes etc with your teams

Report proxy addresses not in Accepted Domains

$
0
0

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore, so do our proxy addresses hasten to multiple.

At least, that's how it seems.  As is the organizational ebb and flow, business objectives change, new business units are spun up, old projects are turned down, and you may need to add or remove proxy addresses in your Exchange environment to account for that.  Frequently, there are orphans in this process.

If you are contemplating a move to Office 365, you may want to take this time to identify proxy addresses stamped on your on-premises users that don't match your accepted domains.  The things you care about, in addition to achieving world peace and if a light beer can truly taste great and be less filling:

  • primary and secondary SMTP addresses that don't match accepted domains
  • primary and secondary SIP addresses that don't match accepted domains
  • user principal names that don't match accepted domains

It's actually easier than you think:

$Users = Get-Mailbox -ResultSize Unlimited
$AcceptedDomains = (Get-AcceptedDomain).DomainName
$SMTPregex = "((^(?i)smtp:S*)(" + ($AcceptedDomains -join "|") + ")|(^(?i)x500:)|(^(?i)sip:S*)(" + ($AcceptedDomains -join "|") + "))"
$UPNRegex = "(?i)(" + ($AcceptedDomains -join "`$|") + "`$)"
