#WeSpeakCode Spotlight: Fiandra Fatharany

$

Microsoft’s #WeSpeakCode campaign aims to empower young people across Asia Pacific to learn coding and realise their potential. We spoke to several individuals who are passionate about coding and involved in encouraging others to discover the fun and excitement of learning to code.

From developing an app that helps users manage meetings to experimenting with the latest techniques in augmented reality, Fiandra Fatharany is one of the many young coders who are leading the charge to transform the technology landscape in Indonesia.

Currently a student at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Fiandra Fatharany (second from right) made her mark at last year's Imagine Cup competition as part of Team DigiD2.

Fiandra attended Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, which is located in Surabaya, East Java, and emphasises scientific, engineering and technological education and research. As part of Team DigiD2 during last year's Indonesia Imagine Cup competition, she worked with her teammates to create an app that complements therapy sessions for children with developmental disabilities. Fiandra has big plans to build on her passion for coding, and to foster collaboration among the growing community of aspiring Indonesian coders.

In your opinion, what is the best way for young people to get started coding?

As an avid gamer, my interest in coding started when my brother and I wanted to create our own games. I was surprised to find that the logic behind coding languages was not as difficult as I had thought, and I was able to learn how to use code to modify my game creations. It helps that I had an amazing computer science teacher in my high school, who taught us how to code with simple Pascal programming. With the abundance of learning resources available online, I think coding is actually one of the easiest skills to pick up in today's digital age. All it takes is having the interest and determination to learn!

Can you share with us your experience at the 2014 Imagine Cup, as a member of Team DigiD2?

I got involved with the CAKRA app project when one of my teammates approached me to support them during the build-up to the Imagine Cup competition. I was inspired by the app idea developed by our team leader Muhammad Rizky Habibi, which is aimed at helping children with developmental disabilities gain access to the treatment they need, regardless of their economic background. Building the app was never about money or fame. Our team simply believed we could make a genuine difference with the CAKRA app, which is named after our partner CAKRA Autism Center.

The CAKRA app developed by Team DigiD2 is aimed at helping children with developmental disabilities gain access to the treatment they need.

How have you managed to integrate the latest technology into the app development?

CAKRA is designed to integrate interactive technologies that help develop an autistic child's motor and occupational skills. We made it a point to consult a therapist throughout the app development process. Microsoft Kinect was the best technology platform available to detect the user’s movements and support voice recognition functions. Kinect has been a really powerful tool for us to realise the interactive capabilities of our app.

Are there any other app development projects that you are currently involved in?
As part of my undergraduate thesis, I am currently focusing on the use of augmented reality to develop an app that can help users overcome their phobia of insects such as cockroaches. I chose this topic to build up my knowledge in the field of human-computer interaction, especially through leveraging augmented and virtual reality technologies.

What would you tell other young women to encourage them to learn coding?

My heartfelt advice would be to follow your passion, because you’ll never know where your efforts might lead you. It doesn’t matter whether you are a male or female coder. The only thing that counts is your competency and love for coding, and what you want to achieve with that skill.

Partners,

Over the past 18 months I’ve been working closely with many partners that resell customer solutions on Azure.  One of the initial challenges partners face with Azure is how to properly setup and manage their customer accounts, ensuring the best possible management experience moving forward.  There are many variables to consider when setting up and managing your customer’ Azure accounts:

  • Was the customer’s Azure subscription created on Azure Direct (Azure.com) or was it created on the Azure in Open platform (you bought Azure tokens and applied them to an account)?
  • Are you signing into Azure with your Organizational ID (AAD account) or your Microsoft Account (Formerly Live ID)?
  • Is your customer subscription underneath your partner subscription, or outside of your partner subscription?
  • How do I get all of my customer’s Azure services to show up in one Admin portal view?

In the following Azure in 5 Minutes video, we’ll address these questions and provide you with the information you need to start managing your Azure customers:

Good luck managing your Azure customers!

Windows

Azure Backup

-----------------------------------------

Azure Backup

https://msdn.microsoft.com/ja-jp/library/dn169036.aspx

==========

==========

Azure Backup

SAB Survey Results: SharePoint dev/test environments

$
0
0

In the 2014 SAB Annual Survey, SAB members cited SharePoint dev/test environments as an area of interest. Since I have done some recent work in that area, I thought I would recap what content we have. This can be divided into SharePoint Server and SharePoint online.

Dev/test environments for SharePoint Server

The four main options, which involve deploying a SharePoint farm in Azure, are:

  • Basic configuration of the SharePoint Server Farm template in the Azure Preview Portal
  • High availability configuration of the SharePoint Server Farm template in the Azure Preview Portal
  • SharePoint 3-tier farm in Azure Test Lab Guide
  • SharePoint intranet farm in a hybrid cloud

Basic configuration of the SharePoint Server Farm template in the Azure Preview Portal

With the SharePoint Server Farm template in the Azure Preview Portal, you can create a simple, 2-tier SharePoint farm easily by specifying very few configuration settings and letting the Preview Portal perform the computer and farm configuration for you.

The intended use for this configuration is an Internet-facing test farm using a cloud-only Azure virtual network. This farm is not connected back to your organization network through a site-to-site VPN connection.

High availability configuration of the SharePoint Server Farm template in the Azure Preview Portal

The SharePoint Server Farm template in the Azure Preview Portal also allows you to create a high-availability, 3-tier SharePoint farm, complete with a SQL Server cluster and an AlwaysOn availability group. This can save you a lot of configuration time, but you will need an Azure subscription that supports the number of servers and cores in this configuration.

Like the basic configuration above, the intended use for this configuration is an Internet-facing test farm using a cloud-only Azure virtual network. This farm is not connected back to your organization network through a site-to-site VPN connection.

SharePoint 3-tier farm in Azure Test Lab Guide

The SharePoint 3-tier farm in Azure TLG builds a simple 3-tier farm, complete with a client computer, and is an Azure-based alternative to building a SharePoint test lab using on-premises computers or virtual machines.

The intended use of this configuration is an intranet test farm using a cloud-only Azure virtual network. It emulates an intranet farm relative to the CLIENT1 computer, rather than from your organization intranet. Unlike the SharePoint Server Farm template configurations, there is no Internet access to the resources of the SharePoint farm.

The advantage to this configuration is that you can use a set of existing SharePoint TLGs to configure permissions, authentication, profile synchronization, and social networking. For more information, see SharePoint Server 2013 Test Lab in Azure.

SharePoint intranet farm in a hybrid cloud

The SharePoint intranet farm in a hybrid cloud topics build a simple 2-tier farm, complete with a simplified on-premises organization network containing a domain controller and client computer.

The intended use of this configuration is an intranet test farm using a cross-premises Azure virtual network. It emulates an intranet farm relative to the CLIENT1 computer on your simplified on-premises network. There is no Internet access to the SharePoint farm.

The advantage to this configuration is the inclusion of a site-to-site VPN connection and the ability to experience the performance and administration of an emulated intranet SharePoint farm relative to your location on the Internet.

Note that you can also build this using the simulated hybrid cloud.

Dev/test environments for SharePoint Online

To create a dev/test environment for SharePoint Online, you can start with the Office 365 Directory Synchronization (DirSync) in a hybrid cloud environment, which looks like this.

Note: You can also deploy this using the simulated hybrid cloud, in which the Corpnet subnet is hosted in another Azure virtual network.

This environment uses an Office 365 FastTrack trial subscription that includes SharePoint Online and password-based account synchronization of the Corp.contoso.com Active Directory domain to the Office 365 subscription. From here, you can add the applications to SharePoint Online and test it from the CLIENT1 computer on the Corpnet subnet.

For a SharePoint 2013 hybrid dev/test environment, you could build out the following:

Here are the major steps:

  1. Start with the Office 365 Directory Synchronization (DirSync) in a hybrid cloud environment.
  2. Build a two-tier SharePoint Server farm in the TestVNET virtual network by using Phases 2 and 3 of Set up a SharePoint intranet farm in a hybrid cloud for testing.
  3. Configure SharePoint 2013 hybrid between the SharePoint Server farm in the TestVNET virtual network and SharePoint Online in your Office 365 FastTrack trial subscription.
  4. Add your application to SharePoint Online and test it from the CLIENT1 computer on the Corpnet subnet.

Hopefully, this has given you some ideas on what you can build to test applications or a proof-of-concept for an IT or productivity workload with SharePoint.

If you can think of other dev/test configurations that you would like to see, comment on this blog post or let us know in the SAB Yammer network.

Enjoy!

Click here for the article in IT World:
CIO’s top 6 considerations for Windows 10 plus latest preview 10061

In the article you will be exposed to compelling Windows 10 benefits including this short sampling of what managers will experience by using Windows 10:

  1. Features such as Windows Hello, Passport, Device Guard that reduce costs, increase productivity / efficiency / security. One example: “Priorities such as consistency, increased productivity, mobile and cloud first, security focus, consumer to enterprise usage alignment, the new web and embracing big data analytics come to mind. One Windows operating system across the diversity of devices aligned with the priorities makes sense.”
  2. Top applications for managers. One example:  for managing contacts, calendars, email, browsing, and doing business much faster, cleaner and more efficiently.
  3. Why you as an IT Manager needs to think about using Windows 10. One example: ”There is a unified Windows Store with universal apps working across all devices and a new web-based Store portal with the ability to create your own private section for your company stocked with acquired Store apps and uploaded custom apps.”
  4. Explicit enhancements for mobile/BYOD such as with Microsoft Surface, Windows Phone. One example: “The mobile device management container layer in Windows 10 provides a consistent management interface across devices (desktops, laptops, tablets, phones,…), device wiping, Windows Store full control, data protection policies, managing multiple users, VPN configuration plus data leakage protection–a first amongst the top three operating systems. Unlike IOS, Windows 10 allows the sharing of content between corporate and personal apps with your IT department logging the event.”
  5. Usability embedded throughout. One example: “Called Continuum, Windows 10 will detect the type of device you are using and optimize accordingly: keyboard/touchpad-(plus enhanced gestures) with mouse or touch. When I get my Surface Pro 4 (joking) this week, Windows 10 will auto-detect the keyboard and allow the use of the small Start menu and then optionally expand to the full-screen Start menu when operating in pure tablet mode."

Introducing PackageManagement in Windows 10

$
0
0

In Windows 10 we are launching a new PackageManagement feature (formerly referred to as OneGet) that enables ITPros or DevOps to automate software discovery, installation, and inventory (SDII), locally or remotely, no matter what the installer technology is and where the software is located.

So why are we implementing PackageManagement? In the Linux world, people are familiar with package managers such as Apt-Get, YUM, RPM, etc, for different Linux distros.  In the Windows world, however, there are quite a few installer technologies, each having their own way to install software, such as MSI, MSU, APPX, and the list goes on and on. This creates a challenge for ITPros and DevOps and a need for a tool to automate the software deployment experience.  PackageManagement is aimed at solving this problem.  Let’s first have a glance at the architecture.

Architecture

PackageManagement is essentially a Package Management Aggregator.  It creates a unified and consistent PowerShell interface for users and provides a plug-in model at the back end that different installer technologies or package managers can plug-in as providers, using PackageManagement APIs.  Each provider further manages one or multiple package sources (repositories) where software packages are stored.

Regardless of the installation technology underneath, users can use these common cmdlets to install/uninstall packages, add/remove/query package repositories, which we call Package Sources, and query a system for the software installed.

 What’s in the box?

In the box, we will have

  • PackageManagement Core component,

  • a PowerShell module to provide cmdlets, and

  • a key set of providers.

That’s it, all other providers can be installed on the fly.  This allows for a small footprint while not losing agility to dynamically bootstrap package providers and install packages from those providers.

The key set of providers coming in the box are:

  • a Bootstrap provider (the provider that knows where to get more providers from)
  • an MSI provider for handling MSI files
  • an MSU provider for handling Microsoft update files
  • an Programs provider (Add/Remove programs) for providing inventory data of anything that registered itself with Add/Remove programs
  • PowerShellGet -- for accessing PowerShell modules.

Quick Start

Let’s explore what PackageManagement can offer you. A handy Get-Command is a good start.

You can see that we provide three levels of management, i.e. provider, package source, and package. The cmdlets are pretty much self-explained. We are particularly interested at the Package level operations, so let’s explore further on the SDII operations.

Discover Packages

This will look at all package sources for the provider PSModule and return all the versions matching the package name.

Install Packages

Once you find the package, you can simply specify the version without specifying a package source and PackageManagement will install that version of package from the correct package source.

Inventory

You can specify the –provider parameter at Cmdlet get-package to check what’s installed in the local machine. There is a special provider Programs included. With –IncludeWindowsInstaller option, it returns a superset of packages comparing to the Add-and-Remove Program, which only lists those ‘volunteering’ registered MSI packages.

Where to get it for down-level platforms

Besides Win10, PackageManagement is available for down level platforms in a few ways:

  • It is included in the Windows Management Frameworks 5.0 (WMF 5.0) Preview that supports back to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. WMF 5.0 also contains PowerShell 5.0, DSC, and other components.

  • For users who only want PackageManagement, we will soon release a stable version of just PackageManagement and PowerShellGet provider as a MSI package, and plan to refresh it frequently.

PackageManagement is also an open source project at https://github.com/OneGet. You can check out the latest news and code from there.
