Using SharePoint On Premise Diagnostic tool

Futuristic, perhaps, but a powered screwdriver for space, almost looks like Han Solo's pistol (sans scope)

From previous intro, we start using the tool to diagnose SharePoint problems.

Let's install, and get to using it!

Once this is released, I expect this to be posted to a GitHub repository.

For now, there will be some mystery for obtaining the file bundle.

Copy folder from build zip file.

Paste to SharePoint machine, whatever standard you use.

From my own past, I prefer a MonAdmin (Monitoring Admin) directory, with a scripts sub-directory, then toolname/version

Example

cd 'C:MonadminScriptsOPD-D2.0.1905.15001'

Start OPD via powershell

cd 'C:MonadminScriptsOPD-D2.0.1905.15001'

.OPD-console.ps1

Avoid some initial questions

cd 'C:MonadminScriptsOPD-D2.0.1905.15001'

.OPD-console.ps1 -mode SharePoint -ShareTelemetry Yes -AcceptEula

PS C:MonadminScriptsOPD-D2.0.1905.15001> .OPD-console.ps1 -mode SharePoint -ShareTelemetry Yes -AcceptEula

Using OPD to check SharePoint environment

Start with the OPDLog Event Log

OPD Main menu

1 - Administration

Central Admin site

Current patch level

Emails

Timer jobs

2 - Performance

3 - Search

Search Hosts Online

Unable to retrieve topology

4 - Services

5 - Setup

Binaries

6 - User Profile

Firewall ports (duplicated from section 4)

Happy checking and to building new SharePoint checks!

Outlook for iOS and Android Default App Signature App Configuration Policy Enhancement

Several customers, especially in the government sector, have requested the ability to remove the default app signature, "Get Outlook for iOS" or "Get Outlook for Android". For these customers, the default signature may act as an endorsement of a technology and/or provider, which may violate regulatory compliance requirements. Building on our announcement in March regarding general app configuration support for Outlook for iOS and Android, we're pleased to announce the availability to disable Outlook's default app signature through app config. Like with the previously announced general app configuration settings, the default app signature is delivered through the Managed App Configuration for iOS or the Android managed configurations allowing deployment by any MDM solution. Like with our other app configuration experience, Intune's App Configuration Policy experience has been updated to include this new setting for both iOS and Android Enterprise managed devices. In addition, we also added the "Allow user to change setting" for "Require Biometrics to access app" for iOS managed devices.

Removal of the 16-character limit for passwords in Azure AD

Many of you have been reminding us that we still have a 16-character password limit for accounts created in Azure AD. While our on-premises Windows AD allows longer passwords and passphrases, we previously didn't have support for this for cloud user accounts in Azure AD. We are pleased to announce that we have changed this limit, allowing you to set a password with up to 256 characters, including spaces. You can see more details on password requirements in our password policy documentation.

Conditional access for the Azure AD combined MFA and password reset registration experience

More and more organizations are using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to protect their access and self-service password reset (SSPR) to reduce support costs and empower their users to manage their credential recovery. Our internal studies show that customers can cut their risk of account compromise by 99% by enabling MFA, so we're REALLY happy to see this growing trend. With this increasing usage, we also heard loud and clear that you want to control the conditions in which security sensitive MFA or SSPR information can be registered. This helps ensure it's the right user—not an attacker—registering this security sensitive info. We are excited to announce the public preview of Azure AD conditional access for our combined registration experience for MFA and SSPR. Many of our largest customers have already been using this while it was in private preview to simplify rolling out MFA and SSPR and we're looking forward to making it more broadly available as part of Azure AD Premium P1 subscription.

Summary:

This dashboard will present software updates status for the Collection and provide with the systems that are in that collection. This is meant to be used for management overview along with some details for the system admin to track down problem machines.

How to install:

First thing we need to do is get the collection(s) that you are targeting with your software update groups. Open the SoftwareUpdateByCollectionScript.sql file in SQL Server Management Studio or your preferred SQL Editor. You will need to change the FILENAME path to your desired location. Change NOV000015 to the collection(s) of your workstations. Change NOV000016 to the collection(s) of your servers. Change SMSDM003 to the collection(s) of your Windows Defender and other updates. Please note if you want to add more than one collection for your workstations add a comma between the two collections. An example of multiple collections is below.

Example:

vFCM.CollectionID in('NOV000015','NOV000029','NOV000190')

Originally, I had the query limited to just the Cumulative Updates, I have commented those out and allowed everything that is applied to the collection. If you wish to filter the dashboard to certain updates, I have left the code in place so you can uncomment them out and it will work. The lines you want to change for this are just after the comment "This is where you would add the title of the update(s) if you want them filtered". If you chose to filter on the Cumulative updates just delete the /* and the */. If you want to filter on a list of updates, then you will need to copy the row with the like in it and paste it however many different updates you are looking to filter from. An example of multiple filters of software updates is below.

Example:

Vui.title like '%Cumulative Update for Windows%' and

Vui.title like '%Adobe%' and

Finally, you will need to run the SoftwareUpdateByCollectionScript.sql on the CAS/Primary database server. This script creates a database called SCCM_PBI_Reporting and then creates the tables and stored procedure needed to run the SoftwareUpdateByCollection Dashboard in Power BI so you will need admin rights to create those on the database.

Using the dashboard:

Once the script has ran successfully on, make sure you have Power BI Desktop x64 installed (Version: 2.67.5404.581 64-bit (March 2019)). Open SoftwareUpdatesByCollections.pbit, the first thing that you will see is the Welcome to Power BI Desktop. Please create an account or sign in if you already have one.

Once logged in a window will appear asking for your server and database, these are parameters for all the queries. The first parameter is your SQL Server of your CAS/Primary. The second parameter is your database of your CAS/Primary (Default is SCCM_PBI_Reporting).

Once you click load, you may be prompted with the message box stating the Native Database query needs approval to run. Click run to continue, if you do not click run the data will not load in the database. It should appear no more than 3 times (one for each query).

You should be able to see the dashboards if all the changes were made correctly. It should look something like this.

Finally, please remember to save the file to your desired location so you don't have to make the changes to the template every time. Open your file with the PBI extension next time and click the refresh button, you will be good to go then.

How to uninstall:

Open the SoftwareUpdateByCollectionScript.sql file in SQL Server Management Studio or your preferred SQL Editor. Go to the bottom of the file. You will see about 10 lines that are commented out. Highlight the 10 lines and execute them. Below is what the code looks like.

--Uninstall SCCM PBI_Reporting database

/*

--Sets database to single user mode so it drops all other connections

USE [master]

GO

ALTER DATABASE [SCCM_PBI_Reporting] SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE

GO

--Deletes the database from SQL Server

Drop database [SCCM_PBI_Reporting]

*/

Kushagra Vaid (General Manager, Azure Hardware Infrastructure)

A comparison of disk writing with Corsica vs CPU.

A look at compression rates of cloud data from application services, IoT text files, and system logs

Project Zipline

A list of companies who support Project Zipline and Corsica.

Leverage the power of automated machine learning

AutoML UI

With Azure Load Balancer, you can scale your applications and create high availability for your services. Load Balancer supports inbound and outbound scenarios, provides low latency and high throughput, and scales up to millions of flows for all TCP and UDP applications.
Azure Load Balancer is available in two SKUs: Basic and Standard. There are differences in scale, features, and pricing
You can use Azure Load Balancer to:

  • Load-balance incoming internet traffic to your VMs. This configuration is known as a Public Load Balancer.
  • Load-balance traffic across VMs inside a virtual network. You can also reach a Load Balancer front end from an on-premises network in a hybrid scenario. Both scenarios use a configuration that is known as an Internal Load Balancer.
  • Port forward traffic to a specific port on specific VMs with inbound network address translation (NAT) rules.
  • Provide outbound connectivity for VMs inside your virtual network by using a public Load Balancer.

Yes, I know January was a long time ago and I’ve already tipped on Sessions on Demand once. But, as it a happens I recently complied a list for my own nefarious purposes and I thought I’d share it to save you (our valued ToTD® reader) the same hassle. Bear in mind that session lists are often skewed towards the interest of the compiler, so head on over to Digital Ready if you still don’t see what you are looking for.

Using Unix MP’s for Shell commands and scripts

Ready to move out of the UI ?

Thanks to Saurav Babu, and Tim Helton's help, I was able to push my MP authoring limits further.

The good thing with the Shell command template in SCOM is that your script is encoded.

Bad news

  1. If functionality doesn't exist in the UI, you can't easily pull the monitor and just add variables to get that functionality.
  2. Scripts and Shell commands are encoded (great news for security!)

Now to the use case - need Sample Count and Match Count to prevent false positive alerts

The UNIX Shell Command library allows us to use the following variables out of the box:

Interval, SyncTime, TargetSystem, UserName, Password, Script, ScriptArgs, TimeOut, TimeOutInMS, HealthyExpression, ErrorExpression

AND we can override Interval, Script, TimeOut, TimeOutInMS

If that's not enough options, then read on!

When the built-in functionality doesn't exist

For this UNIX shell command/script monitor, we required SampleCount and MatchCount

Variables explained

SampleCount is the number of times (samples for an alert).

If SampleCount = 4, this means 4 samples will generate an alert

MatchCount is the number of intervals before monitor state changes

If Interval = 60 (s), and MatchCount = 10, then it will take 10 minutes (600s before we alert)

Combining the 2 means 4 samples over 10 minutes will generate an alert.

Sometimes this is called alert suppression or counting failures before alerting

Built a custom DataSource, ProbeAction, and WriteAction, as the UNIX Shell Library MP did not include these additional variables.

Please review my updated MP Fragments TechNet Gallery for the custom MP and fragments!

https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Uncommon-Custom-MP-c5a12a86

Encoding the script or command to run

The other issue with UNIX scripts and commands, is the UI encodes the scripts.

How do we get around it you ask?

Since we are building an MP Fragment and MP, we must figure out how to encode.

To encode the script to put into your SCOM monitor (and MP Fragment)

Example

$script = 'if [ `ps -ef | grep sleep | grep -v grep | wc -l` -eq "1" ]; then echo false; else echo true; fi'

# Verify script variable
$script

# Get $script bytes
$s = [System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetBytes($script)

# Verify script bytes output (optional as bytes broken out by line)
$s

# Encode script to Base64
$encoded = [System.Convert]::ToBase64String($s)

# Verify $encoded
$encoded

# Optional
# Verify string converts back properly
[System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetString($s)

$encoded output is what needs to be entered into the <script></script> variable in your monitor

Example Output

PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop> $script = 'if [ `ps -ef | grep sleep | grep -v grep | wc -l` -eq "1" ]; then echo false;
else echo true; fi'
PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop> $script
if [ `ps -ef | grep sleep | grep -v grep | wc -l` -eq "1" ]; then echo false; else echo true; fi
PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop> $s = [System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetBytes($script)
PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop> $s
PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop> $s = [System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetBytes($script)

PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop> $encoded = [System.Convert]::ToBase64String($s)
PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop> $encoded

PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop> [System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetString($s)
if [ `ps -ef | grep sleep | grep -v grep | wc -l` -eq "1" ]; then echo false; else echo true; fi
PS C:Usersscomadmindesktop>
